NEW FORMS OF URBANIZATION
A deft handling of ongoing discussions about statistical methodology for measuring the populations and demographic characteristics of cities , New Forms of Urbanization tackles the issues of comparability, areal units, methods of aggregation, and measures of urban and rural in standards for the presentation of urban statistics. New Forms of Urbanization does so ably by bringing in perspectives from all over the world. This book should help address the global disparities in data, paving the way to greater efforts to streamline and coordinate approaches.
David R. Rain, US Census Bureau, Washington DC, USA
This book should be of major interest to scholars, students and government officials interested in urban planning, demography, geography, and other social sciences concerned with the dramatic ongoing process of urbanization sweeping the globe.
Professor Richard Bilsborrow, University of North Carolina, USA
The International Union for the Scientific Study of Population IUSSP - photo 2
The International Union for the Scientific Study of Population (IUSSP), originally set up in 1928, was reconstituted in its present form in 1947. Its principal objectives are to:
  • encourage research into demographic issues, population problems, and population and development relationships;
  • stimulate interest in population questions among governments, international and national organizations, the scientific community and the general public;
  • foster exchanges between population specialists worldwide and in different disciplines;
  • disseminate scientific knowledge on population as widely as possible.
The principal ways through which the IUSSP currently achieves its aims are:
  • a General Conference held every four years, the most recent being that in Salvador, Brazil, in 2001;
  • large regional population conferences, organized as the opportunity arises;
  • scientific activities, taken forward under the auspices of its Council;
  • publication of conference proceedings and scientific reports.
Further details about IUSSP and its activities are available on its www.iussp.org website.
