Pedro Fernndez de Quirs was a remarkable navigator and explorer. Having sailed in 1595 as chief pilot in the ill-fated Spanish expedition to the Solomon Islands, he returned to the Austral Lands - the area of the New Hebrides - in 1605 with another expedition, which is the subject of this volume. In his Introduction Father Kelly sets out to resolve some of the outstanding historical problems of this Quirs expedition in the light of recently discovered documents. At the same time he gives a brief description of the Franciscan missionary apostolate, its contribution to geographical discovery in the Pacific, and its missionary plans for the natives of the Austral lands. He also provides a systematic survey of source material in Spanish, Roman and other European archives. The volume contains 32 documents concerning the 1605 expedition, including Munillas Relacin, as well as the Franciscan Missionary Plan. All these have been translated by Father Kelly. Continued in Second Series 127, with which the main pagination is continuous. This is a new print-on-demand hardback edition of the volume first published in 1966.

El Autor
La Austrilia del Espritu Santo was the name chosen by Pedro Fernndez de Quirs to express the political and religious character of his discovery. For this reason it is the title selected for the present volume.
The purpose of this work is threefold: first, to attempt to resolve some of the outstanding historical problems of the Quirs expedition in the light of newly discovered documents; second, to set forth briefly the Franciscan missionary apostolate in general, its contribution to geographical discovery in the Pacific, and its missionary plans for the natives of the Austral Lands; third, to provide a systematic survey of source material in Spanish, Roman and other European archives.
As the limitation of space has led to much compression and many omissions some expressions used need clarification. The term 'Three Spanish Expeditions' refers to the Spanish voyages from Peru, in search of the islands and mainland of Terra Australis between 1567 and 1607; these were the 1567-9 expedition of Alvaro de Mendaa, the main discovery of which was the Solomon Islands, his second expedition in 1595-6, with Quirs as chief pilot, to form a settlement, and the Quirs expedition of 1605-7 (with Luis Vez de Torres as admiral), which is the subject of this study. Separately they are referred to as the 1567, 1595 or 1605 expedition. Frequent use is made of the word 'Bay', to indicate the Bay of San Felipe y Santiago (St Philip and St James) of La Austrialia del Espritu Santo (Big Bay in Espiritu Santo Island, New Hebrides) the principal discovery of Quirs. The term 'La Austrialia' or 'Austral Lands' is used to denote the region of this discovery. By the natives of the 'Bay' are to be understood those encountered by the Spaniards near the port of Vera Cruz and along the valley of the River Jordn. Similarly, too, the use of the term 'Melanesian'. In the so-called 'marginal islands' (eastern Melanesia and western Polynesia) its connotation has become more geographical than ethnological, since many of the islanders are of Micronesian and Polynesian as well as Melanesian origin, e.g. the Taumakoans, Tikopians and the lighter skinned peoples of the Banks and northern New Hebrides Islands. The nomenclature given by Quirs has been kept as far as possible, in the hope and belief that it will be restored in time to the islands of his discovery.
