About the Book and Editors
During the second half of the twentieth century, great changes have occurred in the natural sciences, spawned by the leap forward in physics during the war years and the growth in understanding of earths history and place in the cosmos. Also, with the new and terrible consequences of full-fledged war, the nuclear age has brought to the fore the need for humanity to work internationally to seek global resolutions for its age-old conflicts. And humanity in this period has begun to see its fate in broader terms, in the context of its interactions with resources and environment. The career of Harrison Brown has spanned this period and these subjects. His major contributions in the physical sciences, global resource problems, and international cooperation are related in essays by his colleagues, each of whom shares with Brown a prominent place in these disciplines.
Kirk R. Smith is research associate at the East-West Centers Resource Systems Institute. Fereidun Fesharaki is energy program leader at the Resource Systems Institute of the East-West Center. John P. Holdren is professor of energy and resources at the University of California, Berkeley.

The East-West Center is fortunate and proud to have had Harrison Brown as the director of its Resource Systems Institute for one-quarter of its twenty-five-year history. As one can see from the contributions in this festschrift, at one time or another Harrison has addressed essentially all the global concerns that either led to the creation of the center or are the subjects of its inquiries. Central to Harrisons career, as well as to the work of the center, is the belief that interdisciplinary study and international cooperation will lead to better understanding of the common problems facing humanity and to better solutions to them.
I first met Harrison in the early 1970s when he was engaged in beginning scientific exchanges with China. I remember thinking what an awesome intellect and engaging human being this man is. A decade later, I was privileged to work with him at the East-West Center for two years before he retired. In the course of our interactions, I was impressed with the breadth of vision and wisdom he brings to discussions of international resources and scientific questions. As any who knows him can attest, he is one of those rare people who can uplift: the tone of a group by just joining ita man with a presence. The East-West Center is indelibly marked by Harrison Browns ideas and beliefs.
The reader will find in these essays the reflection of a remarkable career. It is remarkable not only for its span, from geochemistry through scientific diplomacy, but also for its prescience. Harrison very frequently has been among the first to identify and articulate issues that soon become major matters of general concern. We look forward with great anticipation to his future contributions.

Harrison Brown graduated in 1938 from the University of California, Berkeley, where he had studied chemistry, and he left for graduate work at Johns Hopkins that same year. There he worked with Maria Mayer and Joe Mayer, among others, and at the time Pearl Harbor was bombed, he had nearly completed his doctoral dissertation under Robert Fowler on the separation of isotopes by thermal diffusion of gases. His particular focus was the separation of uranium isotopes. Just as he has often done during his career, he had become interested in a topic that soon would become of critical importance: Isotopic separation of uranium shortly became vital to the war effort through the Manhattan Project.
