Total War:Warhammer is the tenth installment of the popular series ofgames from the Creative Assembly studios, combining the elements ofgoverning a country in a turn-based system with effective battleslead in real time. However, contrary to the previous titles of thefranchise, the action of the game was set up in the dark fantasyworld known from battle and role-playing games prepared by theGames Workshop.
The Total War:Warhammer guide contains:
A description of all thefactions in the game: Empire, Dwarves, Greenskins, Vampire Counts,Chaos;
A thorough description ofall of the key aspects of gameplay - movement around the map,governing your country, diplomacy and leading battles andsieges;
General tips associatedwith the gameplay, as well as with the new mechanisms in the TotalWar franchise - magic;
A detailed description ofall of the story-related missions, for every faction available inthe game;
Hints that might comehandy in multiplayer games;
A list of all of theachievements, coupled with the information that might prove helpfulto acquire them.
Basics
In Total War: Warhammer the entire Old World can be found onthe campaign map. This is the biggest and the most importantcontinent in this universe and may bear some resemblance to Europe.A player can conquer this land by using one of the five in-gamefactions:
Empire - a strong faction of men (similar to theHabsburg dynasty from XVI century)
Dwarfs - honorable warriors living in thestrongholds in the mountains.
Greenskins - wild groups of orcs, goblins andsimilar races from the wastelands
VampireCounts - The undead led by the necromancers
Chaos - destructive and demonic forces[available via the pre-order or after buying a DLC]
Apart from that, the campaign mapis filled with neutral factions controlled by the AI (some of thefactions will be playable after other DLCs are published). Also,each of the factions (except for Chaos) is divided into smaller,individual groups. This means, that upon starting the game, theplayer starts the campaign having only one province. Thus, thefirst tours are spent on creating and maintaining the rightrelationships with the 'relatives'. The map below shows thestarting position and the political situation in the OldWorld.
The main mechanics of thegameplay are mostly the same as they were in theother Total War games. However, two basic differences can befound:
There is no total conqueranymore - A limit has been imposed concerning the areas that onecan conquer, in order to make the gameplay more interesting anddifficult, but also to avoid some potential story plotholes. Forexample, greenskins cannot conquer anything beyond the mountainsand wastelands on the south of the Old World (they can stillplunder them however).
Winds ofMagic - Magic is common in any type of fantasy and so it ispresent in Warhammer. Here, sorcerers and spells exist but theireffectiveness varies depending on the location. If the Winds arestrong in a particular area (depicted as colorful waves of energyhovering over the ground), casting spells can be easier and viceversa. It is advised to keep an eye on it before attacking anenemy.
It is important to mention thetypes of characters that play the crucial role in the campaignmap.
Legendarylords - Faction leaders. Before starting a campaign, a player hasto choose a character that will stand in the charge of the kingdom.All of the Legendary Lords differ between each other with theirspecial abilities, artefacts that they can obtain during themissions and also with their goals required to win the campaign.They are also immortal, even if they are killed they areresurrected couple of tours later.
Lords - They are leading the armies to battle(Generals), lead the fleets (Admirals) and maintaining theprovinces (Overseers). Each of the lords has different abilitieswhich help him in taking active part in the battle and givingparticular bonuses on the territories theymaintain.
Heroes - They move on the map by themselvessabotaging and assassinating other heroes. They can also calm downthe riots in the provinces and discover unraveled parts of the OldWorld. They can also be added to army in order to get more helpfrom their abilities during the fight.
Given the fact that the games fromthe Total War franchise are extremely complicated and quitedifficult, it's worth to look through the tips presented in thisguide before (and during) you start your adventure with the game.Those will be most useful to the players that are new to thefranchise, but even the most experienced players should findsomething interesting here.
