Foreword
The human body is an incredible machine. If given the right input, it can do amazing thi ngs.
In our years of experience, we have seen many people reverse chronic incurable diseases, lose fat weight that seemed impossible, and overcome cravings and feelings of insatiable hunger they struggled with for ye ars.
One of the most common diseases that we see turn around is type -2 diabe tes.
Estimates are that almost half a billion people around the world have type -2 diabetes. Countless people are losing limbs and eyesight and dying needlessly every day. But this book is not just for those with diabetes. Its much bigger than that and can benefit anyone who needs to lose fat and improve their blood sugar and metabolic hea lth.
What we love about The ProFAST Diet , written by diabetes and metabolic health expert Dr. Brian Mowll, is its focus on energy toxicity as the root cause of type -2 diabetes and metabolic dysfunct ion.
The body can only store so much energy before it runs out of places to put it. Overstuffed fat cells are the central problem in metabolic syndrome, and Dr. Mowll does a great job explaining this phenomenon as he relays how the body works before laying out the diet its elf.
Its essential to understand how the personal fat threshold dictates how much we can get over - fat before the cascade of metabolic dysfunction begins, leading to insulin resistance, type -2 diabetes, and other cardiometabolic health problems. Once we understand this, it becomes clear how to reverse the process and heal the b ody.
The ProFAST diet, as an adaptation of the Protein Sparing Modified Fast (PSMF), is an excellent tool for erasing energy toxicity and helping the body get back into metabolic bala nce.
As Dr. Mowll describes, the fastest way to reverse type -2 diabetes is to shrink your fat cells and grow your lean muscle. The ProFAST diet is specifically designed to maintain or build lean mass while rapidly shrinking adipose tissues (fat cells). This state gives your body more storage space for glucose while decreasing stored fat and reversing insulin resistance in the adipose tis sue.
High - quality protein provides amino acids to maintain and grow muscles. Since protein is preferentially used to build lean mass, the body doesnt want to use it as fuel unless it has no other option. If you are ultra - lean and not eating other fuels, like carbs and fat, the body will be forced to use protein as fuel. If you have type -2 diabetes, insulin resistance, or metabolic syndrome, your body is typically over - fat , so it will tap those fat stores for fuel when youre in an energy deficit. This increase in fat burning shrinks the fat cells and reduces insulin resista nce.
As Dr. Mowll describes in Chapter 2, The ProFAST diet also helps get your hormones in balance and leads to better hunger control. When you follow this plan, gone are the days of afternoon energy crashes or sugar cravings two hours after eating a meal high in carbs and refined sug ars.
We have worked with clients and implemented our own version of the PSMF for over fifteen years. Time and time again, clients cant believe how satiated they feel when following this plan, even with days that only include 700 calories! This feeling results from controlling hormones and the hunger that can result from an imbalance in ene rgy.
In The ProFAST Diet , we also love how Dr. Mowll keeps the focus on nutrient dense whole foods. We have found that focusing on the most vitamins and minerals per calorie speeds the healing process and improves satiety. The body needs micronutrients to thrive, and getting those from food while limiting caloric energy is the best path to positive and lasting resu lts.
Many people dont realize that animal proteins are some of the most nutrient dense foods you can eat. This benefit is why prioritizing protein naturally helps increase nutrient dens ity.
This approach is potent for reversing metabolic dysfunction. You can rapidly shrink the amount of fat stored in your adipose and thus reverse insulin resistance. We have seen it countless times with clients. One of our clients, Ann, shared this st ory:
I used to weigh 230 (pounds), and about ten years ago, I dropped to 155, gained some, and have been yo - yo - ing between 200 and 170 for a decade now.
I was doing lazy keto often and discovered I had no trouble maintaining while on keto, but I really was often hungry and wasnt losing. Though lower carb always helps, I was doing net carbs and probably not really in ketosis a lot of the t ime.
After years of waffling, she implemented a stricter keto diet of fewer than twenty grams of carbohydrates per day and started losing significant weight. She added our thirty - day cleanse and then started using the PSMF. In three months, shes lost over twenty pounds and is still go ing!
She told us, Im pretty happy where Im heading! Loving not being hungry; it feels like the struggle is ov er!
The ProFAST diet is a powerful tool for rapid fat loss. If youre ready to make some changes to lose weight, improve blood sugar, and regain your metabolic health, dive in and let Dr. Mowll guide you through how its done in this amazing b ook.

Introduction
I needed to do something dras tic.
I had just woken up with my pillow soaked in sweat and my heart racing. It was about three oclock in the morning, and I went downstairs, pulled out my blood pressure machine, and hooked myself up. What I saw on the display thoroughly shocked and frightened me. My blood pressure was higher than it had ever been at 190/120. Not only that, but I felt hot, swollen, and sick. It was at that moment that I decided to do something profoundly differ ent.
I felt like I was on a train moving toward a life that I didnt wantone of obesity, diabetes, medications, disease, and early death. If I didnt change right away, I felt that I might never be able to stop the momentum. And I had that sinking feeling in my chest that it was almost too l ate.
The thing is, I should have known better. I had been practicing for almost ten years, helping people prevent and reverse chronic disease with nutrition and lifestyle management. I had seen the worst of the worst when it comes to diabetes and metabolic problems. I had images etched into my mind of people losing their feet, going blind, injecting insulin, and lying in bed on kidney dialysis because they didnt stop it in time. Still, I had let it hap pen.
Over the preceding three years, I had slowly gained thirty pounds. It had been a tough period in my life. I got divorced, moved several times, ended a business relationship with another doctor, and had a lot of financial stress. At times, my life seemed out of control. So, I ate. My diet wasnt even that bad except for the popcorn and fries that I enjoyed a bit too often, but I was overeating at night while worrying about my fut ure.
