The scariest moment is always just before you start. After that, things can only get better.
From a Dream to Reality
No matter what kind of writer you are, I imagine youve dreamed of the day you would become an author.
From the pride of getting your first glowing review, to the exhilaration of holding your very own novel, theres something magical about the publishing process. Soon youll be sending your story out into the world, setting it high atop your bookshelf, and sharing it with those you care about. Combine that with the reverence we often show towards published authors, and really, its no wonder so many writers fantasize about publishing long before they ever put pen to paper.
Of course, actually getting there is the tricky part.
By this point in your writing journey, youve already come a long way. Youve created a thriving world out of only your imagination, captured your ideas on the page, and refined your story until it was something you could be proud of. Yet, despite all that work, you still arent done. As you march steadily closer to publishing your novel, youre approaching one of the most complex parts of your writing journey, and as someone whos been there before, I can say with confidenceits a dense, dark jungle ahead.
You see, many writers dont fully realize just how much work goes into publishing a novel. Sure, they understand the basicsyou need a cover, some kind of description, and perhaps even a few keywords. But, what comes next?
This is where many find themselves getting lost.
Not only are there tons of elements to considerfrom ISBNs to categories, preorder windows, formatting rules, and morebut there are so many varied paths you can take as a self-published author, each with its own hazards and triumphs waiting for you. In fact, figuring out which route is best for you is in many ways more challenging than publishing your novel itself. You can always copy what another author has done, but creating a publishing plan that genuinely resonates with your goals and desires is a whole other task.
Because of this, I wouldnt blame you if youre feeling a bit intimidated.
As I sit down to write this, theres a decent chance youve never touched the self-publishing process before, fearing exactly what I just described or perhaps blissfully unaware of just how much was in store for you. On the other hand, maybe you have tried to publish your novel, only to get halfway through the process before burning out and giving up. Ive even had a few writers tell me that they always wanted to self-publish, but eventually resigned themselves to traditional publishing simply because they couldnt get a grasp on the self-publishing process.
Ultimately, its hard to sort through the many pieces that go into publishing a novel, and theres no shame in strugglingbut Im here to tell you you can do this.
Just like you overcame every other challenge along your writing journey, so too can you overcome this one. The key is having someone to guide you. As hard as it may be to imagine, I was actually once in your shoes. When I launched my very first book, I knew nothing about the self-publishing process, and I was overwhelmed by the sense that I was completely lost. Unsure what else to do, I dove right into uploading my manuscript, skipping tons of important work and basically forcing myself to self-publish backward. While Im still proud of that first book, I can distinctly remember feeling that I would never live up to my traditionally published competition. Instead, with no map to guide me, I settled for fumbling through on my own.
Fortunately, flash forward a few years later and I have multiple books under my beltas well as a much better understanding of the self-publishing process. Not only that, but these days Ive found that my books dont look any different from their traditionally published counterparts. Though those books have whole teams of professional formatters, designers, and marketers behind them, in the end even a solo self-published author can create something just as professionalso long as they know what theyre doing.
Of course, I didnt get here overnight, and you wont either. However, whereas I had to flounder and find my way on my own, you dont have to.
Thats where this challenge comes in.
The Ten Day Author is a step-by-step guide to the publishing process, providing a patient voice and a guiding hand as you navigate the complex world of self-publishing. Whats more, this challenge was designed to fit
