My name is S.J. Scott. I run the blog Develop Good Habits .

The goal of my site is to show how continuous habit development can lead to a better life. Instead of lecturing you, I provide simple strategies that can be easily added to any busy life. Its been my experience that the best way to make a lasting change is to develop one quality habit at a time.

Instead, its about targeting a milestone that encourages daily action. My preferred method is to do it in the S.M.A.R.T. format (Specific, Measurable, Attainable, Relevant and Time-bound) .

I set S.M.A.R.T. goals every three months (you'll learn why later on). Do I achieve all of them? Not at all. Instead, goals help me gain regular insight into what I really want from life and what actions can get me there. With this book, I hope to give you the same experience.

Its not hard to set a dynamic, inspiring goal. The trick is to follow it up with consistent action. In the following book, youll learn how to set goals and then turn them into habits youll follow every single day.

What are S.M.A.R.T. Goals?

Before we get to the meat of this book, allow me to introduce a few concepts so we can all have the same frame of reference.

So what is a goal?

A goal is the desired outcome of an action or task.

People have different reasons for setting goals. Many want to improve their professional lives, challenge themselves or achieve specific dreams. The value of goal setting is that it helps you take an unclear idea and turn it into reality.

People who set goals are much more productive, according to numerous research studies. They also tend to be wealthier and more successful in their professional lives. Setting a goal and taking specific steps to achieve it will help you accomplish many things in your life.

So what are S.M.A.R.T. goals?

The key to effective goal-setting practice is to define your goals. It is not enough to say, I want to be rich. This vague statement doesnt say anything about how and when the outcome will be achieved. In fact, it doesnt even clarify what you mean by the term rich and what, according to you, is poor.

You cant create an action plan if you dont have a clear description of your desired outcome. The solution? Write down a goal with specific objectives. In keeping with the theme of this book, you need to create S.M.A.R.T. goals.

George Doran first used the S.M.A.R.T. acronym in the November 1981 issue of the Management Review .

It stands for: S pecific, M easurable, A ttainable, R elevant and T ime-bound.

Heres how it works:

S: Specific

Specific goals answer your six W questions: who, what, where, when, which and why .

When you can identify each element, youll know which tools (and actions) are required to reach a goal.
