GUIDES TO HISTORICAL ARTIFACTS
Books in this series are comprehensive guides to classes of historical artifacts commonly found in excavations, archives, museums, and private collections in North America and across the globe. Designed for archaeologists, material culture specialists, museum professionals, historians, decorative arts scholars, and collectors, the books explore the interconnections between objects and social identity, and are amply illustrated to aid in the identification and interpretation of the technical, temporal, and diagnostic significance of objects described. The series also serves to collate disparate and often obscure specialist literatures and provides an arena for contributors to explore the role of individual objects or assemblages in social action within communities.
Series Editors
Carolyn L. White is Assistant Professor of Historical Archaeology at the University of Nevada, Reno. She is particularly interested in marginal artifact types and the use of material culture to understand identity construction.
Timothy James Scarlett is Associate Professor of Historical Archaeology in Michigan Technological Universitys Industrial Heritage and Archaeology program. His research interests focus on material cultures role in the interplay of systems of cognition, belief, and economy.

I would like to dedicate this book to the three men I worked for and with on large historical archaeology projects in Virginia and Idaho: the late James Deetz, Darby Stapp, and especially Roderick Sprague, whose suggestion for a book on breweries led directly to the writing and publication of this volume. Digging in the dirt is rewardingit offers the thrill of discovery, expansion of thinking, and the joy that comes from working with people of ideas and action, such as these men.

My deepest appreciation goes to Dr. Roderick Sprague who told me of the series of books on archaeology being undertaken by Left Coast Press and suggested I propose a book on brewing. I took classes from Dr. Sprague over twenty-five years ago and participated in archaeological work that he supervised in Warren, Idaho. He served on my doctoral committee. This project would never have happened without his initial suggestion.
