Preface
Fundamentals of Tests & Measuresfor the Physical Therapist Assistant describes the role of the Physical Therapist Assistant (PTA) in collecting subjective data and performing tests and measures to collect objective data. This text is designed as a resource that can be used by PTA students both in the classroom and in the clinical setting. It can be used across the PTA curriculum, serving as a resource for PTA faculty and clinical faculty who guide students through learning and developing their skills for the clinical setting. Additionally, this text can be a valuable go to reference for the new PTA graduate or the experienced clinician.
Organization of the Text
The text is separated into two parts: Part I describes the role of the PTA in collecting subjective and objective data. The importance of preparing for treatment and strong communication skills are also covered. Part II then details the variety of tests and measures that can be used with various patient conditions. The text guides the student through the objective data collection process, providing step-by-step instructions to assist in mastering the successful execution of each test and measure. The skill demonstration videos that accompany the text can complement classroom instruction and serve as a reference to individuals as they progress through their education as a PTA student. Brief case examples, accompanied by sample documentation, enable the reader to understand each test/measure in the context of a patient scenario.
Chapter 1 describes the role of the PTA in the patient examination process, discusses the clinical reasoning process, and provides suggestions for developing data collection skills. Chapters 2 and 3 focus on the fundamental considerations of patient interaction and subjective data collection. Chapter 4 discusses the treatment considerations that a student must take into account when preparing to treat a patient. The importance of a thorough chart review prior to treatment is emphasized, and documentation of subjective data is introduced. Chapter 5 introduces the reader to the process of collecting objective data using tests and measures. The remaining chapters (69) contain information about a wide variety of tests and measures, generally organized by the type of condition for which each test/measure would be most appropriate.
The ultimate message of this text is that the PTA is a vital member of the physical therapy healthcare team who plays a critical role in gathering information using a myriad of tests and measures and subjective data collection approaches.
