INTRODUCTION
I have been doing makeup for a longtime, even before I received my estheticians license and startedworking professionally as a makeup artist. In my professionalcareer as a makeup artist, I have been asked so many times abouthow to apply makeup. I have a lot of makeup books that I love toread because its what Im interested in but for most women, theyjust want to know what they need to do and how to do it to looktheir best. Thats where the idea of this book came. It sets outwhat you need to know in a simple, easy to follow, way.
There are factors in how your makeupcan look the best for you and, once you know them, its easy. Yourskin, face shape, eyebrow shape, eye shape (and best eyeshadowcolor for your eye color), hair style and glass style (if you wearthem) can all factor in to how to look your best. First thingsfirst, lets start with your skin, the foundation for itall.
SKIN
Skin is a very personal subject to meand its the reason I started using makeup. When I was in highschool, I had cystic acne. I can tell you there were days I told mymom I wasnt going to school because I was so embarrassed andashamed because of my skin. It made me hide who I really wasbecause I wasnt confident enough to look someone in the eye when Italked to them because I always thought they were looking at my badskin. I started using makeup to try and hide my acne but, in theend, it really just ended up looking like a mask and making it lookworse. That was back in the 80s when Accutane had first come out. Ihad tried everything else and finally my dermatologist let me go onAccutane. I was so happy I even thought about writing him a letterprofessing my thanks when I got through with the treatment. Thetreatment itself wasnt easy to get through, but it was well worthit. I had another bout of acne in my early 20s and went on Accutaneagain and, since then, havent had much of a problem. In my 40s Istarted to get acne on my chin (hormones most likely the reason)and I went on Spironolactone for a couple of years to help controlit.
I can tell you, there is nothing amakeup artist loves more than to see that the person they are goingto work on has good skin. Its the foundation for where goodlooking makeup starts. So, before you begin, make sure that youhave a good skin regime. If you dont have good skin, a visit tothe dermatologist is well worth it. When you go to a makeup counteror to a kiosk, someone is trying to sell you something because theyget something out of it. Theyll tell you it works even if itdoesnt. Nothing is going to replace seeing a professionaldermatologist that is trained to diagnose skin ailments and cangive you medical grade treatments if you need them.
FACE SHAPES
Different people have different shapedfaces. They are described below with examples of famous people witheach face shape. Decide which one you resemble the most (sometimesit can be difficult, but pick what you think you come close to orask someone who can look at you can give an objective opinion). Then, read the tips on how to apply highlighter, blush or bronzerto get the most complimentary look for your face shape.
Highlight andContour: Contouring changes the entirelook of your face. Facial features are viewed as a combination oflight and shadows. By applying a dark tone, you create a falseshadow, making it appear as if there is dimension. The opposite istrue for lighter tones; they act as highlights and trick the eyeinto thinking they stand out. Contouring with makeup is usuallyapplied on the temple area, nose, eyes, and chin areas. Selectshades that are only about one skin tone away from your naturalone.
HEART SHAPED
Reese Witherspoon andRhianna
If you have a heart shaped face, it iswider at your forehead and it curves down to your narrow chin likean inverted triangle. You can highlight the chin to help broadenit, highlight your forehead and underneath the eyes just on top ofyour cheekbones to draw attention to the center of your face. Youcan also contour your temples and cheeks to diminish the width ofthis portion of your face.
Blush Application: For heart shaped face, apply color slightly belowthe apple of the cheek for more of a contour, then up at adiagonal. Adding color here balances a smaller jawline andchin.
LONG SHAPED
Sarah Jessica Parker andJennifer Aniston
The long face has high cheekbones, high and deep forehead and a strong, sharp chiseled jawline. If youhave a long face, you must never highlight or contour your face asthis will make your face appear even longer. But you may brush abit of bronzer across your chin to create the illusion of a shorterchin. You can be generous with your blush and place heaps of coloron the apples of your cheeks as this will help to widen and shortenyour face.
Blush Application: When you apply your blush, you should startcloser in on the apples of your cheeks and brush in an outwardmotion across the face.
ROUND SHAPED
Mandy Moore and KirstenDunst
If you have a round shaped face, it isfuller and generally looks more youthful than other face shapes. Itis shorter, fairly wide, with full cheeks and rounded chin. Youcould contour your face by highlighting the forehead, the under eyearea, just on top of your cheekbones and the center of your chin todraw attention to the center of your face. You may also want tocontour your temples, cheeks and jawline with a bronzer or aproduct this is one or two levels darker than your natural skintone to create an illusion of a slimmer face.
Blush Application: For a round face, apply color in a sweepingmotion, starting under the cheekbone and bringing it up towards thetemple. The diagonal application of color creates an angle thatcreates a slimming effect to the face.
DIAMOND SHAPED
Jennifer Lopez andElizabeth Hurley
The diamond shaped face is widest atthe cheekbones and the jawline and forehead are the same length(but still narrower than the cheeks).
Blush Application: Do not apply blush in the hollows underneath yourcheekbones, but on the apples of your cheeks instead. Avoid blushesthat are shiny or illuminating because you dont want to make yourcheeks look any fuller.
OVAL SHAPED
Charlize Theron and KatieHolmes
If you have an oval shaped face, luckyyou! It is considered to be symmetrically perfect. You do not haveto contour or highlight your face. You can experiment with almostall the makeup trends and have fun. It is broader at the cheeks, tapering in slightly at both the forehead and the chin.
Blush Application: For an oval face, start the color on the outercheek and sweep back toward the hairline horizontally. This createsa linear effect that visually widens the cheek area, balancing theface.
SQUARE SHAPED
Angelina Jolie and DemiMoore
A square face has the same width atthe forehead, jaw and the cheeks. If you have a square face, highlight down the center of your forehead, underneath your eyes, just on top of your cheekbones and also the tip of your chin todraw attention to the middle of your face. You may also contouryour hairline at the two corners by your temples and the jaw at theboth corners. You can also apply blusher to the apples of yourcheeks to help draw the attention away from the corners of thesquare face and help widen the area and make it appear more ovalshaped.
