Table of Contents

An den Schlaf

D er du mit deinem Mohne
Selbst Gtteraugen zwingst,
Und Bettler oft zum Throne,
Zum Mdchen Schfer bringst,
Vernimm: Kein Traumgespinste
Verlang ich heut von dir,
Den grten deiner Dienste,
Geliebter, leiste mir.

An meines Madchens Seite
Sitz ich, ihr Aug spricht Lust,
Und unter neidscher Seide
Steigt fhlbar ihre Brust;
Oft hatte meinen Kssen
Sie Amor zugebracht,
Dies Glck mu ich vermissen,
Die strenge Mutter wacht.

Am Abend triffst du wieder
Mich dort, o tritt herein,
Sprh Mohn von dem Gefieder,
Da schlaf die Mutter ein:
Bei blassem Lichterscheinen
Von Lieb Annette warm
Sink, wie Mama in deinen,
In meinen giergen Arm.

Die schne Nacht

N un verla ich diese Htte,
Meiner Liebsten Aufenthalt,
Wandle mit verhlltem Schritte
Durch den den finstern Wald.
Luna bricht durch Busch und Eichen,
Zephir meldet ihren Lauf,
Und die Birken streun mit Neigen
Ihr den sten Weihrauch auf.

To Sleep

Y ou who with your poppy
have power even over the eyes of gods;
you who often bring beggars to the throne
and shepherds to their girls,
listen: no tissues of dream
do I demand of you today;
perform for me, dear one,
the greatest of your services.

By my girls side
I sit; her eyes speak of pleasure,
and beneath the envious silk
her breast is heaving noticeably;
often in the past Cupid delivered her
to my kisses;
I now have to forgo that happiness,
her strict mother is on guard.

In the evening you will find
me there; oh, step in,
sprinkle poppy from your wings,
and send her mother to sleep:
by the pale light of the candles
let Annette, heated with love,
sink into my greedy arms
just as Mama sinks into yours.

The Beautiful Night

N ow I leave this cottage,
where my darling lives,
and walk with muffled steps
through the solitary, dark forest.
Luna breaks through bushes and oaks,
Zephyr announces her course,
and the birches, bowing, scatter
the sweetest incense before her.

Wie ergtz ich mich im Khlen
Dieser schnen Sommernacht!
O wie still ist hier zu fhlen,
Was die Seele glcklich macht!
Lt sich kaum die Wonne fassen!
Und doch wollt ich, Himmel, dir
Tausend solcher Nachte lassen,
Gb mein Madchen Eine mir.

Am Flusse

V erflieet, vielgeliebte Lieder,
Zum Meere der Vergessenheit!
Kein Knabe sing entzckt euch wieder,
Kein Mdchen in der Bltenzeit.

Ihr sanget nur von meiner Lieben;
Nun spricht sie meiner Treue Hohn.
Ihr wart ins Wasser eingeschrieben,
So fliet denn auch mit ihm davon.

Willkommen und Abschied

E s schlug mein Herz, geschwind zu Pferde!
Es war getan fast eh gedacht.
Der Abend wiegte schon die Erde,
Und an den Bergen hing die Nacht:
Schon stand im Nebelkleid die Eiche,
Ein aufgetrmter Riese, da,
Wo Finsternis aus dem Gestruche
Mit hundert schwarzen Augen sah.

Der Mond von einem Wolkenhgel
Sah klglich aus dem Duft hervor,
Die Winde schwangen leise Flgel,
Umsausten schauerlich mein Ohr;
How I delight in the coolness
of this beautiful summer night!
Oh, how calmly one can feel here
that which makes the soul happy!
The rapture can hardly be conceived!
And yet, heaven, I would
abandon a thousand such nights to you
if my girl gave me just one.

By the River

F low away, dearly beloved songs,
to the sea of forgetfulness!
Let no lad sing you again in delight,
no girl in the season of blossom.

You sang of my sweetheart only;
now she mocks my fidelity.
You were written on water,
and so flow away along with it.

Welcome and Farewell

M y heart beat: at once to horse!
The deed was nearly quicker than the thought.
Evening was already cradling the earth,
and night hung upon the mountains.
The oak already stood in its garment of mist,
a towering giant, there
where blackness peered from the bushes
with a hundred dark eyes.

From a hill of cloud the moon
looked lamentingly out of the haze;
the winds beat soft wings
and soughed fearfully around my ears;

Die Nacht schuf tausend Ungeheuer,
Doch frisch und frhlich war mein Mut:
In meinen Adern welches Feuer!
In meinem Herzen welche Glut!

Dich sah ich, und die milde Freude
Flo von dem sen Blick auf mich;
Ganz war mein Herz an deiner Seite
Und jeder Atemzug fr dich.
Ein rosenfarbnes Frhlingswetter
Umgab das liebliche Gesicht,
Und Zrtlichkeit fr michihr Gtter!
Ich hofft es, ich verdient es nicht!

Doch ach, schon mit der Morgensonne
Verengt der Abschied mir das Herz:
In deinen Kssen welche Wonne!
In deinem Auge welcher Schmerz!
Ich ging, du standst und sahst zur Erden,
Und sahst mir nach mit nassem Blick:
Und doch, welch Glck, geliebt zu werden!
Und lieben, Gtter, welch ein Glck!

Mit einem gemalten Band

K leine Blumen, kleine Bltter
Streuen mir mit leichter Hand
Gute junge Frhlings-Gtter
Tndelnd auf ein luftig Band.

Zephir, nimms auf deine Flgel,
Schlings um meiner Liebsten Kleid!
Und so tritt sie vor den Spiegel
All in ihrer Munterkeit.

Sieht mit Rosen sich umgeben,
Selbst wie eine Rose jung.
Einen Blick, geliebtes Leben!
Und ich bin belohnt genung.

the night created a thousand monsters,
but my spirits were fresh and happy:
in my veins what fire!
In my heart what a blaze!

I saw you, and gentle joy
flowed to me from your sweet glance;
my whole heart was by your side
and my every breath was for you.
A rose-colored springtime atmosphere
encircled your lovely face,
and tenderness toward meyou gods!
I hoped for it, but didnt deserve it!

But alas, as soon as the morning sun rose,
parting constricted my heart:
in your kisses what rapture!
In your eyes what pain!
I went, you stood looking down at the ground
and watched me go with moist eyes:
and yet, what happiness to be loved!
And to love, gods, what happiness!

With a Painted Ribbon

K indly young gods of springtime playfully
sprinkle flowers and little leaves
for me with a light hand
onto an airy ribbon.

Zephyr, take it upon your wings,
and tie it around my sweethearts dress!
And so she will step before her mirror
in all her sprightliness.

She will see herself surrounded by roses,
she herself young as a rose.
Cast me a glance, my love, my life,
and I will be sufficiently repaid.
Fhle, was dies Herz empfindet,
Reiche frei mir deine Hand,
Und das Band, das uns verbindet,
Sei kein schwaches Rosenband!

The Ratcatcher

I am the well-known singer,
the widely traveled ratcatcher,
whom this long-famous city
definitely has a special need for.
And no matter how numerous the rats are,
and even if weasels are involved,
Ill cleanse this place of them all,
each and every one has got to go.

And then, this good-tempered singer
is sometimes also a child catcher,
and can subdue even the wildest ones
when he sings his golden tales.
And no matter how defiant the boys are,
and how recalcitrant the girls are,
I play a chord on my strings
and they all have to follow me.

And then the very resourceful singer
is occasionally a girl catcher;
he never arrives in any town
without turning the head of many a one.
And no matter how bashful the girls are,
