Introduction
The History of Supershopping
I STARTED THE COUPONING and refunding revolution with my 1979 bestselling book, Cashing In at the Checkout, and have helped millions of people save money at the supermarket.
Cashing In at the Checkout began with: It was only about two decades ago that a bottle of Coca-Cola cost you five cents. Today, the standard size bottle will run you from thirty-five to sixty-five cents. I hate to guess what it will cost by the time my children are grown. Well, today my children are grown, and the average price of a bottle of Coke is about one dollar. Not bad after thirty years. However, things arent so good for the majority of grocery products. The average prices of eggs, milk, and bread have risen over 420%. Unfortunately, these are items that we all need to buy on a regular basis. Manufacturers know this, which is why they are able to raise the prices. This is, after all, a supply-and-demand economy.
As I write this, the current economic climate isnt rosy. Unemployment rates are high and rising, and homes are going into foreclosure at an alarming rate. And although many experts predict that the worst is over, people are still facing rough times. Were all looking to cut costs wherever we can, and I know I can help.
In this new book, I want to introduce my brand-new, simple and comprehensive five-step Supershopping System, which can save you 50% or more at the checkout every time you shop. Yes, I said 50%. In fact, a seasoned Supershopper can save 75%, 85%, even 95% on grocery bills. But before I share my Supershopper secrets, I need to take you back to when it all started.
It was 1971: President Nixon was in office, Disney World just opened in Florida, and many Americans, including myself, were in need of extra money. I lived in a small apartment in the Bronx with my husband, Steve. We were both working as New York City schoolteachers, trying to make ends meet. I soon began collecting coupons to save money, something I had often seen my mother do. I immediately saw a reduction in my grocery bill, but I discovered that coupons alone were not enough. I started experimenting with different supermarket savings strategies. I tried everything from changing the stores I shopped at to buying in bulk, and everything in between. After about a year of this, I had finally fine-tuned my strategy and was now saving over 50% every time I went shopping.
Shortly thereafter, it dawned on me that I had to start spreading the word. So from the faculty room at my school was born Refundle Bundle magazine, which alerts consumers every month to over $400 in current refund and coupon offers. The magazine includes tips, Internet savings, coupon swapping, and company information packed into forty-eight pages. Creating the magazine was an enjoyable learning experience. Everything was done manually in those days. I wrote it up on a typewriter, used manual printing equipment, and printed up the magazine one copy at a time. In 1973 I began selling Refundle Bundle for profit. It soared in popularity, boasting over 410,000 subscribers from its original thirteen. I felt great satisfaction from helping those who needed it; something that has remained important to me to this day.
After Cashing In at the Checkout was published, I was considered the leading expert at saving money at the supermarket. The year before, I was given the title of Coupon Queen by Betty Furness of NBCs Today. I hold that title with great pride, having been the first Coupon Queen in the country, probably the world.
In 1976, when our first son was born, I took a leave of absence from teaching and became a more dedicated coupon shopper. I honed my skills so well that in February 1978, armed with my coupons and
