Bradley didn t choose a real town because a ctional location gave her more fr eedom in her storytelling. However , just as the residents of Susan s town do in the novel, the people of Kent played an important role in helping the soldiers who wer e resc ued from Dunkirk. The town that Ada and Jamie are sent to as evacuees is a nameless, ctional place.
But it is based on the county of Kent in southeast England, about an hour away from London by train.
The Battle of Britain was also fought directly over Kent in the summer of 1940. Germany planned to invade southern England in the fall, and the bombings of airelds and harbors were the gro undwork for the attack. Luckily , Germany postponed the invasion, which never ended up happening. Operation Fortitude In June of 1944, Kent participated in Operation Fortitude. It was a complicated deception to fool the Germans into thinking that an invasion was coming across the English Channel fr om Dover , a small town in Kent.
Dummy vehicles, smoke, and reectors simulated an attack to divert the Germans attention from the r eal invasion in Normandy , France. The deception played a larg e role in the success of the Allies (Britain, France, the Soviet Union, and the United States) at D-Day and their eventual victory over Germany .
Befor e Ada moves to the countryside, she occupies herself by watching the bustle of life on London s cr owded streets below her window . A LONDON CHILDHOOD F rom the Novel Despite the war , childr en in London still made time for play . Popular toys and games often had a wartime theme.
