Housebreaking Your Puppy

So now, of course, youll want to train your puppy how to not pee in the house. I know that this was definitely my first concern when facing the challenge of a new puppy.

As excited as I was to get my sweet little Bartleby home, I was also anxious about housebreaking. I can tell you this, its not as hard as you might think.

The key here is to train yourself as well as your puppy. You need to learn how to recognize your puppys body language and anticipate when he needs to go outside.

Keep in mind that puppy has no idea that its a bad thing to do his business in the house.

For all he knows, this is the only environment that exists. Your house is planet Earth. There is no other world out there. Unless, of course, you teach him otherwise.

Throughout this whole wonderful experience remember that the schedule is god. You must adhere to a routine. Puppies can adjust to schedules quickly and it will make your life so much easier.

Another note to remember: punishment doesnt work unless you catch puppy in the act.

The Nose Knows:

Your puppy looks for the right place to eliminate based on smell. Thats why its vital to keep a good cleaner or odor eliminator on hand. When puppy has an accident, you need to make it as though it never happened or else puppy will smell that spot and think that he can pee there again.

Training sprays do the opposite of odor neutralizers (but arent necessary for training).

Yelling at him five minutes after hes peed will not teach him to stop peeing in the house. Also, for Petes sake, dont rub his nose in his own mess. That will only freak puppy out and might actually send him spiraling in the opposite direction rather than training him.

Step 1: Buy, borrow, or steal (not really) a crate for training. Its necessary for keeping your puppy in one spot so he isnt hiding behind couches and pooping there. You might be able to get away with not using one but it will smooth out the process.

Step 2: Plan for someone to be with your puppy at all times for the next three to four days. The first days are the most important when it comes to training. If you havent gotten your puppy yet and are simply doing your research, plan to get your puppy when you have a weekend off of work (also, high five for researching before buying).

Step 3: Gear up. Buy treats and toys for rewards/bribes. Buy cleaners for your floors (because accidents will happen). You might also want to look into training sprays which tell a puppy where its appropriate to eliminate (be warned, these smell awful).

Step 4: Schedule feedings and watch the clock. Youll generally want to take puppy outside about an hour after hes eaten.

Step 5: Create your auditory cues. These are key phrases or words which youll use for the rest of puppys life. Something like go do your business or lets roll or go outside. Puppy will eventually associate this phrase with eliminating.

Step 6: Look at puppy and use your cue then take him outside. Continue to use this cue until hes done with his business. Praise him when hes done and reward him with a treat. If he hasnt gone after five minutes, take him inside, put him in the kennel (like putting a bomb in a bomb shelter), and wait 15-20 minutes then try again.

Step 7: Repeat every one to two hours. Dont forget the praise at the end of a successful potty trip. Also dont forget to accompany puppy. Dont make him go it alone (because he probably wont go alone).

Your puppy isnt officially housetrained until hes gone a month without accidents. And accidents will happen dont freak out. Hes not pooping on your hard wood floors just to spite you. Got it?

Good, lets move on

Clicker Training

Most pet stores carry small little devices called clickers. They click, hence the name. This can be used as yet another aid in training. You give your puppy a command (and maybe even a hand signal) then click the clicker. Its all about making connections and associations for your puppy making neural pathways for him to follow.

Walking Your Puppy

Leashes arent fun for your puppy. Hes a wolf, remember? Wolves roam. They wander and smell and explore. However, as the alpha dog and the master, you need to be in control of situation.

Thats where walking and leashes come in handy. This keeps him contained to a certain radius. You can let him explore within that radius and keep him and the general populace safe from his rampaging puppy instincts.

Before you start, choose your weapon well. Buy weapon, of course, I mean leash and collar.

Leashes come in different weights and lengths depending on the size of your dog. It doesnt matter much but keep in mind the size of your puppy and how far you want him to be able to roam. As far as collars go, there are several different types. Do NOT use a choke collar too many risks involved. You can use a simple around the neck sort of collar or you can invest in a leader (which goes around the head and snout) or a harness which takes the pressure off of the neck.

Its really a matter of preference but do use common sense. Dont put a heavy weight leash on a tea-cup poodle puppy.

Also, unless this walking time is meant to be for elimination purposes, try to make sure that puppy poops before leaving the house. Otherwise, youll end up toting around a bag full of nasty whenever you walk your puppy.

Gross.

But do remember to take a bag with you for accidents. Better safe than sorry.

Now, this first maiden voyage will be a short one thats mostly stop and go but be patient. This is going to take a lot of practice to get right.

Dont expect puppy to know how to do this naturally because this is really going against his ancestry.

Step 1: Choose a side for him to walk on (either left of you or right of you). It doesnt really matter which side you choose but be consistent and keep that as his side from now on.

Step 2: When he pulls and fights (which he will), immediately stop and make him sit. When he sits still, praise him and keep walking. Repeat this process (stop, sit, praise) every time he fights. I told you this first walk was going to be short and stuttering, right?

Step 3: If he wants to wander within the radius of the leash (without pulling or fighting) let him.

Step 4: When encountering other dogs and people (especially children), remain in control of your puppy. If hes freaking out, stop and let the others pass you. Reassure your puppy so he doesnt think that the strangers are going to attack him.

Step 5: Repeat the walk once more (so youre walking twice a day)

Stranger Danger!

Dogs bark. Its a fact of life. Your wolf puppy may start barking for many reasons most of them probably to get attention. Hell also bark to warn people of approaching danger or to warn them away from his territory. He doesnt want strangers in his space so hell bark to scare them off. This can be annoying, of course, so you might feel inclined to train this behavior out of the dog. You can start by praising him when he barks once but then refuse to give him attention for further barking.

You can also employ the help of others to come by and show how much they arent effected by your puppys barking this will show puppy that his barking is futile and it might encourage him to stop barking.
