I t's not important to understand just why it's important, nay, vital to train your puppy. First off, no puppy or dog owner wants to be known as "that dog owner." Yes, you understand what we mean. You don't want everyone in your neighborhood talking about how much is a nuisance your puppy is, how loud it is and how annoyed they are by it. You don't want people to view your puppy as unfit just as much as you don't want people to view you as an unfit owner.

Other reasons have to do with taking your puppy out in public. You simply cannot take it to the park to play if your puppy won't listen to commands and rules. You cannot take it for walks if your puppy refused to walk correctly on a leash and listen to your voice. Furthermore, you cannot take your puppy in public, especially around kids if it's too playful and at times, even aggressive. Training your puppy to behave and listen in your home is just as important as teaching it to behave and listen to commands so that you can have it in public settings.

Finally, you also want to train your puppy to the best of your ability so that you can avoid having to get rid of it or give it to another person because you can't handle it. This would be terrible for many reasons. This would obviously be sad emotionally for both you and the puppy, especially if you have children who will get quite attached. It will also mean that, whatever money you'd spend on the puppy as far as purchase price, breeding new costs, shots, vaccinations and food, would have been a waste. At times, these costs can amount to thousands of dollars! Lastly, this would end up being a very stressful and frustrating thing to go through for you, your family and your friends. Giving a puppy up is never a fun thing and it can sometimes be quite difficult to do so if your puppy has negative behavior or attitudes.

Overall, you want the same thing every pet, especially puppy owner wants: to have a nice, respectful, clean, friendly puppy that you can takeout in public without worries and love in your home! T he very first basic rule you want to follow when attempting to train your puppy is to start right away when you first bring the puppy into your home! This one is thought because there is a chance you've already had your puppy in your home for awhile before you decided to begin training. That's still okay! The important thing is to begin as soon as you can in the shortest time possible after bringing your puppy home. You might be wondering now: " well, where do I even begin?" Valid question!

Your very first step is to make a plan and agree upon rules with the rest of your family and friends that you live with. This is important for several reasons. One, is that you want the puppy to receive the same set of rules from every person he or she comes into contact with. Consistency is the key and this is going to help your puppy learn faster and easier. It will also help you avoid any disagreements you have between the people you live with over the puppy. Of course, if you live alone, this thankfully doesn't apply to you and you can choose to do whatever you want!

The next thing you want to think about, after discussing with your friends and family (or whoever you live with) is just precisely what the rules are going to be with your new puppy. Are they allowed to jump on people? Are the allowed to be in the living room? How about your office? Where should they go to the bathroom and how should they tell you they have to go? What happens when they don't listen to you or they have a bathroom accident in the house? Is the puppy going to be allowed to sleep in your bed or in anyone's bed in general? Where is the puppy going to sleep? Are they going to be allowed to eat table scraps? These are all important things to consider. So, sit down and brainstorm just what it is that you want to teach your dog and why.

Next, you want to begin to enforce the rules you've decided on immediately. Although this may seem like a no-brainer and something so simple, it's actually going to be quite difficult. There is going to be so much excitement surrounding the new puppy and its arrival that it will be easy for you and others to cave in and break whatever set of rules and routine you've already decided upon. You may find yourself or others saying "ohh, just for one night," or "Ohh, just for today." Remember that this is a slippery slope and give the wrong message to the puppy right off the bat. One night easily turns into two and then five to ten years.
