CONTENTS
PREFACE
This book is intended to be a particular Companion to two categories of readers. On the one hand, those who wish perhaps for the first time to gain a quick, but accurate summary of what happened in the Stuart Age will find the book much more convenient to use than a traditional textbook. The chronologies, for instance, give a clear overview of the development of political change, foreign policy, religious reform and cultural activity, while the biographies provide mini-portraits of all the leading figures. On the other hand, serious students of the period, researchers, teachers and writers, who are working on a particular topic, will find the book invaluable in checking up either on the most relevant books and articles to consult in their research or on specific details which have slipped their memory. It is worth pointing out that there is a degree of overlap between the sections. For instance, it is inevitable that the chronologies of domestic and military affairs will contain certain events in common. Readers are also encouraged to make frequent cross-references in order to build up a fuller understanding of what was taking place.
Needless to say, I have consulted a large number of books and other source material in the compilation of this volume. The following have been particularly valuable: E.B. Fryde, D.E. Greenway, S. Porter and I. Roy, eds, Handbook of British Chronology, 3rd edn (1986); the new Oxford Dictionary of National Biography (Oxford, 2004); the original Dictionary of National Biography (Oxford, 1975 edn); Edwin Riddell, ed., Lives of the Stuart Age, 16031714 (1976); C.P. Hill, Who's Who in Stuart Britain (1988); C. Parry and C. Hopkins, An Index of British Treaties, 11011968, 3 vols (1970); G.P. Gooch, Annals of Politics and Culture, 14921899 (1901); Godfrey Davies and Mary Freer Keeler, Bibliography of British History: Stuart Period, 16031714 (Oxford, 1970 edn); J.S. Morrill, Critical Bibliographies in Modern Europe: Seventeenth-Century Britain, 16031714 (Folkestone, 1980); J.E. Doherty and D.J. Hickey, A Chronology of Irish History since 1500
