A Life of Service

Harriet Tubman dedicated her life to helping others. Though born a slave, she believed all people should be free. For about years, Harriet bravely led slaves to freedom. Her life continues to inspire us today!

Araminta Ross was born in Maryland around 1820. She later used the name Harriet, her mothers name. As a child, Harriet was a babys nursemaid. Later, she worked in the fields with other slaves.

.

.

Thoughts of Freedom

In 1844, Harriet married a free black man named John Tubman. About years later, she heard her master might sell her. So, she decided to escape! Harriet made it all the way to Philadelphia, Pennsylvania.

Freeing Others

In December 1850, Harriet returned to Maryland to free her sister and her sisters children. This was the first of about trips Harriet took south. She freed about slaves over about years!

.

.

Harriet used parts of the Underground Railroad to get slaves safely to the North. Others against slavery helped them through secret routes and stopping places. Harriet often took slaves as far as Canada.

Harriet became a well-known conductor of the Underground Railroad. She was known for being brave and never losing or leaving a passenger behind. Harriet didnt let anyone turn back, either!

Wartime

Harriet supported the Union army during the Civil War. Many people in the North wanted an end to slavery, too. From 1862 to 1865, Harriet worked as a nurse, cook, and scout!

Harriet was a helpful scout because she knew her way around the South. She found out where the Southern army kept guns and supplies. This helped the Union army plan attacks!

.

.

Later Life

Harriet lived out the rest of her life in Auburn, New York. She died at her home there in 1913. In 1990, President George H. W. Bush named March Harriet Tubman Day!
