I n 1993 Bob Kohl became the first person
to perform a backflip on a motocross bike.
He knew the trick was awesome.
But he
didnt know that it would change the motocross
world forever.
Before Kohl, motocross riders werent sure if
a backflip on a motorcycle was even possible. People
were impressed when Kohl landed the trick on his Honda
CR80 motocross bike. To flip and land on a motorcycle was an
amazing stunt. But Kohl mastered that trick. And he paved the
way for other new stunts. More people learned to flip. Daring riders
tried to land flips on even bigger bikes than Kohls. Riders kept pushing
the limits of the backflip. They started combining flips with other tricks.
Without Kohl and his bike, the explosion in motocross riding and best
trick may never have happened.

Jacko Strong competes at
the 2011 X Games moto X
best trick competition.
Motocross bikes were originally motorcycles designed for racing
on a dirt course. But eventually riders began using those dirt tracks
for more than racing. They began performing tricks on the courses. In
the ESPN X Games motocross best trick competition, professionals
do stunts off big jumps. The best trick jumps are much larger than the
jumps in a traditional motocross course. The tricks are more intense.
