Chapter One: Introducing Factfulness

he late International Health professor Hans Rosling has published the instant New York Times bestselling book Factfulness: Ten Reasons We're Wrong About the Worldand Why Things Are Better Than You Think. He says that people ask a lot of simple questions about global trends. Questions like What percentage of the worlds population live in poverty? Why the worlds population is increasing? How many girls finish school?

In the efforts to answer these questions, we systematically get the answers wrong. Rosling says that even chimpanzees can randomly choose answers and would consistently outguess the Nobel laureates, journalists, teachers, and investment bankers.

In Factfulness , Rosling writes his arguments together with Anna and Ola, his two long-time collaborators. They offer a radically new explanation of why these things happen. In the book, they reveal the ten instincts that distort our collective perspective. One of these perspectives is on the tendency to divide the world into two camps. People usually talk in a version of us and them. They also showed the way we consume media of all kinds. Rosling says that fear rules in media consumption. And they discuss how we perceive progress through believing that most things are indeed getting worse.

The problem is simple: we dont know what we dont know. Even our guesses are informed by biases that are unconscious and predictable. He says that for all the imperfections, the world is in a much better state as compared to what we think. Rosling doesnt deny that there are real concerns. However, he says that when we always worry about everything instead of embracing a healthy worldview based on facts, we can lose our innate ability to focus on the things that we fear and threaten us most.

Rosling says that some of the labels that we use to describe other nations are meaningless and outdated. Two of these labels are developed and developing. In Roslings new book, he offers a new and better framework to describe the different nations. He says that to describe the world, he proposes four income groups. What this proposed framework enunciates is one that took decades for scholars of global development. This framework matters because its hard to pick up on the nations progress when the social sciences divide the world into rich and poor nations. When these are the only options, there is a temptation to think that when someone does not live a particular quality of life, that life is poor.
