The Women and International Development Annual
This volume, the first in a series of annual reviews, has been created to highlight the multiple approaches that exist within the field of Women and International Development (WID). WID grew out of a shared concern for the disadvantaged position of Third World women, and the emerging understanding that the development process affects men and women differently. On this foundation has grown a diversified field whose membership includes university faculty and students, development planners in national and international governmental systems, practitioners in program implementing agencies, and activists working at the grassroots level in the developing world.
Women and International Development encompasses a variety of disciplines and theoretical approaches, and addresses a range of topics in the diverse countries which make up the Third World. Thus far, the field has maintained its differences without separating into narrow specializations. This volume, and subsequent volumes in the series, is designed to enhance the existing dialogue and to provide a forum in which specialists working inside and outside academia can communicate. The goal of the series is to contribute to scholarly developments in the field and to changes in development policy and programming.
