INTRODUCTION
Dear Rebels,
Welcome toPowerful Pairs, a book about incredible mothers and daughters who embody the Rebel spirit together. A mother-daughter relationship can be so many thingsintense, inspiring, supportive, and yes, sometimes frustrating. After all, our mothers are the ones who welcome us into this world and hear our first cries. Whatever happens after that is a true adventure!
In these pages, you will read about well-known pairs, like Beyonc and her daughter Blue Ivy, and Julie Andrews and her daughter Emma Walton Hamilton. And you will be introduced to new duos, like pilots Laurie and Arianna Strand and rowers Sarah and Sally Kettle. The stories in this book will take you to the fight for womens suffrage in England and to the search for an Alzheimers vaccine in China.
You will meet women who work together, dance together, and go on amazing, life-changing journeys together. So, grab a hard hat and a hammer and rehab homes with Karen E. Laine and Mina Starsiak Hawk. Kick off your shoes and practice traditional Indian dance moves with Niveditha Shetty Hegde and Ishanvi Hegde. Then pack your bags and hike the Appalachian Trail with Briana and Cambyr Sullivan.
The mothers and daughters in this book challenge and motivate each other. They dare and encourage each other. They share a special bond. And because of this bond, theyre able to do extraordinary things, like distribute vaccines and create breathtaking art. They help their communities and explore uncharted waters. They grow and learn together, sharing their gifts with the world.
We hope these tales inspire you and make you smile. Most of all, we want to honor the fact that mother-daughter relationships come in all flavors, shapes, and sizes. We hope what you find in here is a connection to Rebels from the past, the present, and the future. Everyone in this book is like you in some wayfull of creativity, determination, and possibility. Always remember that there are people loving and supporting you on your journey and that the Rebel Girls community is growing stronger every day because of you.

BEYONC AND BLUE IVY CARTER
SINGERS
nce upon a time, there was a girl named Beyonc who tried to shrink herself. She kept her gaze to the ground, never raised her hand in class, and barely spoke. Why? Because mean girls at school didnt like her light-brown skin.
One day, Beyoncs first grade teacher taught the class a song. When Beyoncs mom asked her to sing it, a rushalmost like electricitycharged through Beyoncs body. Performing while her mother washed the dishes, she had no clue that her electrifying voice would inspire millions of future fans.
To build her confidence, Beyonc started a singing group, and after some painful rejections, the girls careers exploded. They sold 60 million records together, and as a solo artist, Beyonc has sold almost double that!
Still, shes never forgotten who she was when she first sang in her mothers kitchen. When she became a mom, Beyonc wanted her daughter, Blue Ivy, to know she never had to make herself small so others could feel big.
When Blue was old enough to express her opinion, Beyonc started asking what she thought about her work. To Beyoncs relief, Blue said shes always proud of her momexcept when she tells corny jokes.
By eight years old, Blue was singing on Beyoncs hit Brown Skin Girl. The song celebrates the power of girls who often get overlooked or bullied for their skin color. It earned Blue her first Grammy. Blue can also be spotted twirling midair in an acrobats hoop in her moms latest visual album.
Whatever the future holds for this talented duo, Beyoncs sure to be right there cheering Blue on and making sure she shrinks for no one.
