Introduction
Making sense of everything the Internet has to offer is no picnic for a beginner. The simple truth is that when many beginners are faced with email, browsers, social media and all that other stuff you need to effectively use the Internet, they start to have second thoughts about making the plunge into cyberspace. Perhaps they think, they are not smart enough or they dont have what it takes to get on-line and use the Internet but nothing could be further from the truth. Every year millions of newcomers learn how to use the Internet and they do it using a guide like this one.
Whats This Book About?
To learn how to use the Internet, you need practical hands-on advice from an expert who understands what it is like to just start out. By working step by step through each of the technologies that tie the Internet together, you can learn how to use the Internet effectively, how to send email, how to participate in discussion groups, how to browse the Web and a whole lot more.
With this book, you dont have to worry about tons of background material or filler, I present only what you need to know to effectively use whatever I am discussing. Instead of having to wade through page after page of stuff you may never even use, you will spend your time learning about the stuff you really will do use. But there is a lot of ground to cover and learning about the Internet isnt easy unless you actively follow along. Although this will require some effort on your part, the plan is designed to be implemented in a weekend. Do you already see the light at the end of the tunnel? You should.
How Is This Book Organized?
Making this book easy to follow and understand was my number one goal! I really want anyone, skill level or work schedule aside, to be able to learn how to use the Internet effectively.
To make the book easy to use, Ive divided it into 12 chapters. Anyone who wants to learn how to use the Internet and its tools effectively should read this book. Because the approach used in this book is ideally suited to beginners, you do not have to be a computer expert to understand and use the concepts examined in this book.
What Do I Need to Use This Book?
The most important ingredient for using this book is a willingness to learn. This book doesnt assume anything and starts you out at square one.
What Do I Need to Know?
This book is designed as a guide to what you need to know to get the most out of the Internet. To get practical and useful information into your hands without the clutter of a ton of background material, I had to assume several things. If you are reading this book, I hope that you truly want to learn how to use the Internet effectively and although you want to learn about the tools you will need to master the Internet, you dont really want to know how the Internet got started, why it got started and all that other stuff thats best left to the history books.
Additionally, because youve already taken the first step in wanting to learn the Internet, I believe that I dont have to convince you that the Internet is this neat, cool, hip thing that you cant live without. Further, to get all this information into an easy to read format, I had to assume you want to learn only what you need to know to make the most of your Internet experience. After all, entire books have been written on some of the individual topics you will find in this book. But do you really want to wade through thousands of pages of stuff you may never even use?
I truly hope you find that this book provides everything you need to use the Internet effectively. Keep in mind that throughout this guide, where I have used click, right-click and double-click, you can also use touch equivalents, tap, press and hold, and double tap.
Thank you,
William R. Stanek

Chapter 1. Introducing the Net and the Web
Every year millions of people get access to the Internet. New users that jump right in with both feet often have problems learning how to use the Internet and its technologies. But learning to use the Internet doesnt have to be a frustrating experience, anyone can learn everything they need to use the Internet effectively by reading this book.
After reading this book, you will know a great deal about the Internet and how to use it. So go ahead, get started. This chapter provides an overview of the Internet, the World Wide Web, and the tools you will use to take advantage these technologies.
Nothing since the television has caused as much controversy as the Internet. Anyone following the news headlines might think the Internet is the devils own playground but nothing could be farther from the truth. The Internet is the worlds largest public discussion forum and the worlds biggest resource library. All public discussion forums have their good sides and their bad sides. All libraries have a few controversial books mixed in with thousands of other books that arent controversial. You need to look beyond the controversial to see the greater good.
The Internet is all about sharing information and bringing the resources of the world into your life. If you want to use the Internet to conduct research, learn new things, get a competitive edge, or keep up with whats happening, so be it. If you want to explore the library shelves that arent as popular as the others, so be it. However, never forget that you have the power to decide what you read and dont read, and you can change what you are looking at as easily as you change the channel on your television using a remote control.
The Net Vs. The Web
The Internet is an enormous collaborative effort between millions of computers around the world that are all linked together. Some of these computers provide information and resources. Some of these computers provide entry points for you and I.
Using the Internet, you can access information whether it is located in your community or half way around the world. Just as you can pick up the telephone without having to worry about the massive array of wires and equipment that may be between you and the caller, you dont have to worry about the equipment and technologies that make the Internet possible.
