He had published three books, and a Web Page had been created for him. He was just in the process of buying a computer, and I advised him on one that would suit his needs. When it arrived and we connected it to an Internet Service Provider, we discovered we could not find his page. It was not listed on any search engine, and the address we had been given was incorrect. I had only been on the Internet myself since August 1996, so in order to help Craig I had to learn very quickly how to use this new medium.

Without access to his original Home Page, we decided to create a new one with the same host (Tripod.com) that had been used for his original Home Page. Their service was free and provided enough space for a few pages and a couple of pictures. Next we had to find a medium to create the Home Page, as we had no experience with HTML. I chose Microsoft Publisher 97 as it had a Web Page creation facility. It was certainly easy to create a page, and it was not long before we had our own page on the web. To further improve my skills I created my own Home Page, so I was now working on two Home Pages.We then discovered that we could have a free Home Page with Geocities, and the next thing I knew I was creating four Home Pages.

By now I had realised that Publisher was not a good medium for creating Web Pages. Its that old cliche The reason your book hasnt been published yet, is because you havent written it YET! I dont know if you can teach people to write, but you can certainly show them what good writing is. What really good teachers do is harness existing skills, teach people how to read attentively, and get writers to rub up against each other and identify anothers strengths. Obviously writers need to have talent, a perceptive understanding of human nature and life and an affinity for language. If you watch a good tennis match and see someone ripping a lovely top-spun backhand across the court, you now thats been built on hours and hours of practice.

I now believe that creative writing CAN be taught but only by published writers. A student with some aptitude and interest can benefit an awful lot from coaching and mentoring and sharing their work with other students. But there are no rules. You cant say this is how you write a short story, or this is how you structure a novel, because something good that doesnt follow that pattern will always come along to challenge that. That said, its difficult to turn a boring writer into an interesting one.
