I n order to draw, you will need some basic drawing materials. You can probably guess what tools you will need in order to produce a drawing. These tools include a pencil, some white paper, a 12-inch ruler, and an eraser. Some specific suggestions include a number 2 pencil or a mechanical pencil, printer paper or a sketching pad, and a pink eraser, kneaded eraser, or a white eraser. Lastly, you will need a space to work on, whether that is a table or a desk.

For paper, you might want to consider acid-free paper. That way, your work will age a lot more slowly and will remain more intact compared to something that is drawn on paper that is not acid-free. If you just need paper to practice on, then printer paper will do just fine. In regards to a ruler, choosing a clear, see-through ruler will enable you to see through your work as you use your ruler.

A dditional supplies that you might find useful include but are not limited to inking pens, templates that will guide you in drawing certain shapes perfectly, a light box, and a drawing compass. Each of these materials can, in their own unique way, help you to create a refined drawing with more ease.

You have probably seen stunning works of painted art in museums and local galleries and have thought to yourself, if only I could do that. While it can be tempting to jump straight into painting, it is important to get the basics down first. This is where sketching comes in. All you will need is a pencil, an eraser, and some paper or a sketchbook.

The great thing about a sketchbook is that you can take it with you wherever you go. That way, you can sketch something whenever inspiration strikes. A sketchbook will also keep all of your sketches in one place so that you can be organized.

Try to take your sketchbook everywhere you go. You never know when inspiration might strike, and giving yourself the opportunity to sketch a variety of things will give you great practice.

Chapter 2 Holding a pencil

T here are a variety of different ways to hold a pencil when it comes to drawing. While you probably already have a favorite or preferred way to hold your pencil, it does not hurt to try out other pencil grips when you draw. Try drawing the same thing while using a different pencil grip each time. You might notice that each sketch comes out slightly different. Even though you are drawing the same thing, by trying out different grips you will most likely leave different marks with each pencil grip that you try out.

The most obvious way to hold a pencil is by gripping it the same way you would grip a pencil when you are about to write. This will probably come the most naturally to you. At the same time, it can be fun to explore other alternatives to see how your sketching style can slightly shift by just changing the way you grip your pencil.
