Introduction & acknowledgments
The modern motorcycle is a triumph of affordable technology crammed into a very small space. Considering that it costs about half as much as an equivalent car (and lets compare like with like, because an ElectraGlide cannot be compared to a Ford Focus), this achievement really comes into focus.
Bikes have often lagged behind cars in their technology, but more recently theyve done a lot of catching up, with features like ABS, traction control and digital fuel injection/engine management all becoming commonplace on two wheels. Its a far cry from the motorcycling of a few decades ago, when intensive maintenance and roadside tinkering was all part of the experience. These days (chain drives apart) the average modern bike should not need any attention between servicing, though its a wise rider who keeps a regular eye on tyre and brake pad wear, and oil level.
