About the Book

In part 1 of this book we will discuss the fundamentals of heads-up tournament poker. We will outline the key principles of heads-up play and go over important topics such as hand strength, hand reading, manipulating ranges, and post-flop play on different board textures.

Part 2 deals with low stakes strategy. We will cover the differences between game theory optimal and exploitative play and explain why the latter one is the correct approach for low stakes games. We will also cover common playing tendencies of low stakes opponents and develop exploitative counter strategies.

Throughout the book we will use some poker terminology to describe heads-up play. When analyzing example hands we will refer to the players as Hero and Villain . The hands are played from the perspective of Hero, so try to put yourself in his shoes and think about what you would do in that situation.

When we use the term equity , we are referring to the expected value of a hand in a given situation. It can be expressed either as a percent chance of winning or the amount of chips a hand would win on average. The term is also used more generally by saying that a hand has good or bad equity.

We will also frequently refer to HUD statistics . A Heads-Up Display, or HUD, displays players statistics directly on an online poker table. HUDs can be used with poker tracking software such as PokerTracker or Holdem Manager.

If there are other terms in this book that you are unfamiliar with, you can look up their meaning in the glossary of poker terms in ).

Heads-Up Fundamentals

Why Play Heads-Up Sit n Gos

In the early days of online poker, the standard and most popular format was full ring (9- and 10-handed play). Gradually, we have seen a shift towards shorthanded games in the form of 6-max and heads-up. Lets look at the main reasons why heads-up Sit n Gos are so popular these days and why you would want to play them.

1) Heads-up Sit n Gos are among the most profitable types of Sit n Gos you can play .

Since there are only two players at a table, play is much looser and more aggressive than in 6-max and full ring games. In a heads-up game, you thus get the opportunity to play a lot more hands. This favors skilled players and gives them a bigger edge over their opponents than they would have in other types of games. To see just how profitable heads-up games can be, take a look at the overall leaderboard on SharkScope.com : it is dominated by heads-up Sit n Go players.

2) Playing heads-up Sit n Gos will increase your profitability in other types of tournaments as well .

Multi-player SnG and MTT players have little experience playing heads-up. This is because they dont reach the heads-up phase in every single game and when they do, it usually doesnt last very long as stacks at this point are often quite shallow. However, there is a significant pay jump from second to first prize in multi-player SnGs and MTTs, so having good heads-up skills will make a lot of difference to your win rate in those games. Sharpening your heads-up abilities by playing heads-up Sit n Gos will also make you more money in multi-player games, as a result of taking a higher percentage of 1st prizes.

3) Playing heads-up Sit n Gos will improve your post-flop skills and make you a better poker player .

When you get dealt a hand like 73o or T2o in a 6-max or full ring game, you are probably not going to play. In a heads-up game, however, it is correct to play many hands (and in position often even all of them). This means that you will frequently get involved with marginal hands and face difficult post-flop decisions. In a full ring game, for example, you will rarely find yourself in a situation where youre contemplating a difficult call with third pair, but in heads-up such situations come around quite frequently. The large variety of spots and decisions you face makes heads-up games extremely valuable for your experience and development as a poker player and will make you more confident in your post-flop abilities. So whatever poker format you like to play, heads-up is a great way of learning and improving your game.

4) Heads-up Sit n Gos are exciting and fun to play .

Not only do you get to play a lot of hands, you also dont have to wait on other players like in 6-max or full ring games, since a new hand is immediately dealt when a player folds. Heads-up Sit n Gos are fast and full of action!

Structure and Rules of Heads-Up Sit n Gos

Most of you will probably already be familiar with the structure and rules of No Limit Holdem heads-up Sit n Gos, but for those who are not, heres a brief overview.

Before the cards are dealt, both players have to place a compulsory bet known as a blind. One player posts the small blind (SB) and the other posts the big blind (BB), which is twice the size of the SB. In a heads-up game, the player in the small blind also has the button : he is first to act pre-flop, but last to act post-flop (he has position).

After both players post their blind, each player gets dealt two hole cards , which are known only to him. The small blind acts first and has the option to fold, call (limp) or raise. When the pre-flop betting round ends with a call or check, we go to the flop : three cards dealt face-up and shared by both players. The flop is followed by a round of betting. When neither player folds their hand, a fourth card known as the turn is dealt and another round of betting ensues. Finally, when both players continue in the hand, a fifth card called the river is dealt, followed by a final round of betting.
