I have never been what you would call a ladies man . Its not that I dont like women or that I dont want to go out with them, its just that Ive never been that confident. Because of this, my mother is always worrying about me and trying to fix me up with people from her work. Anyway, a few years ago I was just on my way home from a disastrous date with someone my mother had set me up with when I decided to stop at a bar to drown my sorrows . I was sitting at the bar when I heard a woman talking on the phone. I didnt mean to eavesdrop on her conversation, but there was something about her voice that caught my attention.

Phrases:

Not what you would call: this phrase is used when you want to politely say that the person or thing is completely different to the adjective or noun that follows the phrase. So for example, Shes not what you would call hardworking means that she is not at all a hard worker. She is lazy.

Example 1: Hes not what you would call handsome.

Example 2: Shes not what you would call a good employee.

Ladies man: this phrase describes a man who is very popular with women. They are good at flirting and very confident around women.

Example: My cousin is such a ladies man. Hes always got a new girlfriend every time I see him.

To go out with someone: this means to date someone. To have a romantic involvement with someone. Its more commonly used in British English while to date is more common in American English.

Example: I went out with a famous celebrity while I was at university.

To fix someone up (with someone else): this is when someone introduces two people to each other who may (in the future) like each other romantically.

Example: My sister fixed me up with her husbands best friend.

To set someone up (with someone else): in this context it means the same as to fix someone up.

Example: I tried to set him up with my best friend but it didnt work out.

To drown ones sorrows: this means to drink alcohol in order to forget about your troubles.

Example: After my divorce I spent about two months just drowning my sorrows.

To eavesdrop on someones conversation: this is when you secretly listen to someones conversation without their permission or knowledge.

Example: She was a very jealous wife, she used to eavesdrop on her husbands telephone calls to make sure that he wasnt having an affair.

To catch ones attention: this means that you noticed something. That you became aware of something.

Example: While all of the actors were good in that film, it was the actress that played the girlfriend that really caught my attention.

Part Two

I tried to mind my own business but my attention kept drifting to the womans voice. She was basically pouring her heart out to her friend about how she had just been dumped by her boyfriend. It turned out that her boyfriend had cheated on her and when she confronted him he just broke up with her. It was strange listening to her because although she was upset, there was a real dignity to her voice and I was sure that she would be fine eventually. After about 30 minutes of listening in on her conversation , I had completely forgotten about my terrible date and all of my other problems. Anyway, I decided that it was time to leave and left without ever seeing her face.

Phrases:

To mind ones own business: this is used to describe when one does not interfere with someone elses affairs/life. It means to not be nosey.

Example: I try not to get involved in office politics, I just mind my own business and do my own work.

Note: It can be used as a phrase when you want someone to stop interfering in your life or to stop them from asking personal questions. For example:

Person one) Why were you fired?

Person two) Mind your own business!

To pour ones heart out: this is when you tell someone all of the emotional details about a story or about your feelings.

Example: He is a very cold father, even though his son poured his heart and explained what was wrong, the father just ignored him.

To dump someone/ To be dumped by someone: this is used when one person ends a romantic relationship with another. It is quite a negative way to say that the relationship has ended and it was because one person wanted it to end.

Example: He is usually the one who dumps the other person but this time it was his girlfriend who dumped him.

To break up with (someone): this is a more polite way to say that a romantic relationship has ended. Also you can use this phrase if it was one person who wanted to end it or both people.
