Preface

The rapid advancement of science and engineering in recent years has increased by the publication of research papers. As the number of students studying science and engineering grows, so does the number of novel research findings. However, in order to better understand these research findings, academia still requires the ability to organize and write research papers. Because there is no efficient textbook designed to illustrate all details of science and engineering paper writing comprehensively, students will typically learn how to write a research paper piece by piece from their advisors.

The main motivation is to write a textbook focusing on illustrating how science and engineering papers are written to assist graduate-level students majoring in Science and Engineering to efficiently and systematically learn how to conduct research and then how to write research papers. A basic understanding of selecting research topics, conducting a literature review, formulating research problems, generating novel ideas, designing algorithms, and conducting experiments are required for science and engineering research. These objectives are critical for higher education institutions that want to prepare students to conduct successful scientific research.

This book, in particular, has four main parts (eleven chapters) that follow the general pipeline of research in the science and engineering field. We begin with an overview of the research itself and the importance of research integrity; then we emphasize how you can find new ideas and form your own problem; then we explain possible ways for you to bring your idea to reality by conducting solid experiments and paper writing; and finally, we explain how you can put your work out there and make an impact on the world of science.

The book is meant for graduate students or junior/senior undergraduate students in the fields of science and engineering, including computer science/engineering, electrical engineering, mechanical engineering, applied mathematics, economics, etc. The target readers also include researchers and engineers in the fields related to RL, CPS and cybersecurity.
