Bonnie B. C. Oh is Distinguished Professor of Korean Studies in the School of Foreign Service at Georgetown University, where she is also Faculty Ombuds Officer. She is co-editor of East Meets West: Jesuits in China, 15821773 (1988), a contributor to volumes such as Japan Examined: Perspectives on Modern Japanese History (1983), and editor of Korea Under the American Military Government, 194548 (forthcoming).
Margaret D. Stetz is Associate Professor of English and Womens Studies at Georgetown University. Her recent publications include British Womens Comic Fiction, 18901990 (2001) and essays in journals such as Transformations, Peace Review, Feminist Teacher, and Canadian Women Studies. She received the 2000 Wise Woman Award for Womens Studies service and scholarship from the National Association for Women in Catholic Higher Education.
Contributors
Christine Choy is Director of the School of Creative Media at City University in Hong Kong. She is a distinguished director, cinematographer, and producer, whose many films include Who Killed Vincent Chin?, a widely screened documentary on the racist murder of an Asian American; Sa-I-Gu (with Dai Sil Kim-Gibson and Elaine Kim); and (with Nancy Tong) In the Name of the Emperor, about the Nanjing Massacre.
Grant K. Goodman is Professor Emeritus of History at the University of Kansas. A specialist in Japanese intellectual history and cultural relations, he is author or editor of fifteen books, including Japan: The Dutch Experience (1986), Japanese Cultural Policies in Southeast Asia During World War II (1991), and Asian History, 3rd Edition (1993).
Dongwoo Lee Hahm is President of the Washington Coalition for Comfort Womens Issues, Inc. (WCCW), based in Maclean, Virginia. Named Person of the Year by the Senior Pastors Association of Greater Washington, she has given numerous speeches and lectures internationally, staged protest rallies, created a video about comfort women, and produced Comfort Women Speak (2000), a volume of testimonies edited by Sangmie Choi Schellstede.
Mona Higuchi is an Asian American visual artist who in 1996 was Artist-in-Residence at the Isabella Stewart Gardner Museum in Boston, where she created Bamboo Echoes, an installation dedicated to the comfort women. Her other recent installations addressing social and political issues include the collaborative works Kristallnacht (1998) and Turbulencia Terrenal (2000).
Dai Sil Kim-Gibson is an acclaimed filmmaker and writer, as well as a former professor of Religious Studies, whose documentaries include A Forgotten People: The Sakhalin Koreans and Sa-I-Gu (with Christine Choy and Elaine Kim). In 1999 she published Silence Broken: Korean Comfort Women and also directed a documentary with the same title, broadcast in May 2000 on PBS.
John Y. Lee, an attorney in Washington, DC, is Chairman of the Board of the Washington Coalition for Comfort Womens Issues, Inc. He has worked on matters related to war crimes for the Office of International Affairs in the Criminal Division of the U. S. Department of Justice, and he has taught law in both Korea and China. He is the recipient of the U. S. Legion of Merit, the ROK Security Medal, and other civilian service awards.
Jill Medvedow is Director of the Boston Institute of Contemporary Art (ICA), as well as the founder of Vita Brevis, an arts organization that commissions and presents projects responding to the historical, aesthetic, physical, and psychological landscape. While Deputy Director for Programs and Curator of Contemporary Arts at the Isabella Stewart Gardner Museum from 199196, she designed and directed its education programs and supervised those relating to Mona Higuchis installation, Bamboo Echoes.
Therese Park is a Korean-born musician and novelist living in Kansas, where she retired after thirty years as a cellist with the Kansas City Symphony. A Gift of the Emperor, her novel about a Korean comfort woman in Palau, was published by Spinsters Ink, a feminist press, in 1997. A sequel about the fictional protagonists post-World War II years is forthcoming.
Chunghee Sarah Soh is Associate Professor of Anthropology at San Francisco State University. A fellow of the American Anthropological Association and recipient of numerous grants, she has published widely on gender and Asian culture and politics in journals such as
