    B rief History

Named for their ability to move briskly, the Whippet holds the honor of being the fastest accelerating dog in the world. Whilst many types of hound dogs have been used for tracking and scenting prey, none can compete with the Whippet's speed and capture of small prey (e.g. hares) in open fields. The Whippet's origins can be traced back to 17th century England, where they were used by the upper classes for hunting purposes, and appeared in numerous paintings from the time period. In later centuries the Whippet became popular amongst the working class as an alternative to the expensive and sought after greyhound, with whom they share many characteristics.
