Just Green It!: Simple Swaps to Save Your Health and the Planet: summary, description and annotation

Going Green has never been so easy!
The array of so-called green products on the market is dizzying and often misleading. Consumers need one reference book that clearly lays out what is the better choicebetween brands, benefits, and costs. Just Green It! compares brand-name products, making it easy for consumers to make environmentally friendly choices on everything from light bulbs to mattresses to baby food. It tells you which products are the best for the planet and also healthy for you, your kids, your home, and your budget. For the average consumer, this means clarity of green definitions and product comparisons that are no longer a luxury, but a necessity.
Authors Ron and Lisa Beres debunk the greenwashing that is so prevalent in modern marketing and teach readers how to know the difference between such confusing terms as natural, organic, chemical free, and nontoxic.
Full of surprising facts and lots of ways to save money and help the environment, this is an essential book for the modern age. Did you know that ...
The Great Wall of China and the Staten Island LandfillFresh Killsare the only two manmade structures on Earth that are large enough to be seen from outer space.
It is a higher carbon footprint to drink imported vodka?
The phosphoric acid in soda leaches calcium from our bones and can lead to osteoporosis?
The Green Movement is concerned about the effects of our collective carbon footprint on the planet. A green home is one that does not endanger the planets health. The Beres, on the other hand, are concerned with how our footprint is endangering the health and well being of each individual.
A guidebook for navigating the oversaturated Green marketplace, Just Green It! is a must have for todays tough economy.

Just GREEN It! was chosen in May 2011 as an honorable mention by San Franciscos 2011 Green Book Festival

PREFACE
TO GREEN OR NOT TO GREEN? That was the question. However, in todays day and age, regardless of the unstable economy, making green choices and living a healthier lifestyle is becoming less of a luxury and more of a norm. Researchers have even predicted a shift in future trends that nongreen will not survive. Good news? If everything were as it seemed, it would most definitely be good news. However, in this recent surge of greenifying our world and marketplace, the line between what is and what appears, has become blurred, leaving the consumer to feel overwhelmed, bombarded, and, in many cases, deceived. The need to make a profit is not a crime, but at what point is the crime committed when profit supersedes integrity? Greenwashing has taken the marketplace by storm to the point that watchdog groups and websites have evolved to keep us abreast of these false advertising culprits. The average consumer must go far beyond reading a label. We now require an education that includes green definitions and product comparisons to keep us safe from the eight-legged marketers colorful web of names and terms that sound, look, or even taste healthy and environmentally friendly. In nearly every purchasing decision you may ask yourself if the short-term savings are really worth the long-term price tag on our health and planet.
Everything in our lifestylewhat we eat, touch, wear, and use to furnish our homesis linked to our health and well-being. Are genetics loading the gun and environment and lifestyle choices pulling the trigger as many have previously thought? Lisa certainly believes so. She became very ill from living in a toxic environment created by everyday, trusted products. It was only through Lisas diligent research and a need for the truth that she discovered that products are not always what they seem. We have allowed a society with an innocent until proven guilty mentality in everything from pesticides and plastics to lead, tobacco, asbestos, and pharmaceuticals. In the U.S., chemicals are typically regulated after studies indicate potential harm exists and a regulatory review is conducted.
With so many untested and unregulated harmful chemicals in the products that surround us, its no wonder that people get sick. Yet, with so little testing and regulation most of us are not informed enough to know the cause. Instead, Lisa and many others run through the gamut of doctor visits, treatments, and medications to mask symptoms. As Gloria Steinem put it best... Who profits from causing, detecting, and treating cancer? Why do we hear so much about the search for a cure, and so little about preventing cancer in the first place?
Through the highways of cyberspace, information has become ubiquitous. You might think its easy to make educated choices, but who really has time in our faced-paced, twenty-first century, technology-thriving world to do all of the researching? Fear not, there is a green light at the end of this tunnel. We have deciphered fact from fiction to inform and educate you on how to live a healthier lifestyle while empowering you, the consumer, to exercise not just your voice, but your purchasing power. Demand better products, and they will become more readily available. Dont settle for untested or unregulated goods for you, your family, and our planet. You canand you domake a difference!

Be the change you want to see in the world.

THE THREE SIDES OF THE GREEN TRIANGLE:
THE THREE Rs, ENERGY EFFICIENCY, AND INDOOR AIR QUALITY
THE THREE Rs
REDUCE
Use paper towels with smaller tear sheets, not extra-thick and super-sized sheets.
The best-selling brands of paper towels are made from virgin tree pulp and then bleached white with chlorine, which pollutes the air and water. Look for towels that come in smaller sheets so you use less for each job.
Use glass storage containers, not plastic storage bags or wrap.
While plastic storage bags and wrap make storing leftovers and packing lunches easy, they are hard on the environment. These plastic products are not commonly accepted for recycling and are designed for a single use and then a trip to the landfill. While it is tempting to re-use them, its not a good idea because they can leach chemicals into your food. This is especially true if they are used to reheat the food. Some plastic wraps are made with PVC, which poses health and environmental risks, so reusing those is particularly dangerous. Instead, buy glass containers with tops. These containers are generally thick, durable glass and come in all sizes and shapes so they are convenient for food storage as well as taking with you on the go.
Opt out of junk mail, dont just recycle.
Junk mail is not only annoying, but it also can be harmful to the environment by promoting additional waste and utilizing precious resources. Choose to reduce and eliminate direct mail by opting out of receiving both junk mail and catalogues. Use Priority Mail, not next-day or second-day air shipping.
Sometimes being organized can help you live greener. Just allowing enough time for a package to reach its destination via ground mail can help fight global warming. Ground shipping is 6 times more fuel-efficient than air shipping.
Use dishwasher, not washing by hand.
Low-tech hand washing may seem like the greener choice over automatic dishwashing. The machines are made from plastic and metals and require electricity to run. However, the average late model dishwasher uses 3.5 gallons of water per load. Do the same load by hand and youll run through 15 to 16 gallons. To reduce the amount of energy used by your dishwasher, it is important to make informed choices. First, make sure the dishwasher is full so you can run it less often. Skip the Heat Dry and Pre-rinse options and let the dishes air dry. If its time to replace your dishwasher, choose an Energy-Star-certified dishwasher to ensure that its energy efficient.
Use electric lawnmower or push mower, not gas powered.
The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) estimates that 54 million Americans are out mowing their lawns every weekend and use 800 million gallons of gas to do it. Gas mowers pollute 10% to 35% more than the average car, and experts estimate that homeowners routinely spill thousands of gallons of gas as they fill up their tanks. To reduce your lawn care pollution, get an electric mower, or try a non-motorized push mower with spinning blades for small yard.
