AUTHORS
Dr Jane Monckton-Smith (editor) is a former police officer and senior lecturer in Criminology with the University of Gloucestershire where she developed the forensic investigation courses offered. Her research specialisms are in homicide, serious sexual assault and forensic narratives, and apart from her research and teaching she often works with secondary victims of homicide. Jane has also authored Relating Rape and Murder: Narratives of Sex, Death and Gender (Palgrave Macmillan, 2010) and Murder, Gender and the Media (Palgrave Macmillan, 2012).
Tony Adams is a retired Detective Superintendent and former head of a Major Crime Department. Tony has almost 30 years experience as an operational police officer predominantly as a detective officer, including time as head of a Criminal Justice Department. He has been involved in many major crime investigations as Senior Investigating Officer and as part of the management and investigation teams, and has also undertaken a number of reviews of historic murder convictions on behalf of the Criminal Cases Review Commission. He was involved at a national level in establishing the competencies required for accreditation of investigating officers as part of the Professionalising the Investigation Process (PIP). He has been a visiting lecturer for the Criminology and Social Sciences Faculty at the University of Gloucestershire and at the University of Southampton.
Professor Adam Hart is a biologist and Professor in Science Communication at the University of Gloucestershire. An active researcher, Adam is a Fellow of the Royal Entomological Society and has a special interest in the public communication of science. He lectures on a wide variety of topics, including entomology, behaviour, genetics, evolution and statistics. His ability to engage undergraduates with complex material was recognised in 2010 with the award of a National Teaching Fellowship.
Julia Webb is a senior lecturer and technician at the University of Gloucestershire. She teaches on a range of courses, including biology, geography and criminology. Julia uses her technical skills to retrieve forensically important evidence from various items seized during criminal investigations. Over the last five years she has been part of the investigating team on various cases across the UK and Europe.
CONTRIBUTORS
Dr Karl Harrison is a Lecturer in Forensic Archaeology at Cranfield University. He has seven years experience working as a Volume Crime Scene Examiner, Scenes of Crime Officer and Crime Scene Manager for Wiltshire and West Midlands Police Forces before working as a Lead Forensic Scientist for LGC Forensics. He is now one of a small number of forensic archaeologists operating in the UK.
Steve Watts MSc, D.Crim (Cantab) DPM, FCIM, FSyI is a former Chief Officer and Detective Chief Superintendent with over 30 years experience, predominantly as a detective and Senior Investigating Officer. In 2000 he commanded the UK team investigating war crimes in Kosovo on behalf of the United Nations, and in 200708 he was Officer in Overall Command of one of the largest linked serial homicide inquiries across not only England and Wales, but also Scotland Operation Anagram. As a member of ACPO he spent some time as the lead for investigative interviewing. Following retirement from the Police Service he worked in the Middle East consulting on strategic and operational policing.
Dean Jones BA (ED) Hons, MSc is a retired Detective Superintendent having served 30 years with Hampshire Police. He spent some time in charge of major crime and latterly Director of Intelligence. He sat on the National ACPO steering group on Investigative Interviewing and developed one of the first Tactical Interview Managers courses. Dean led the team at the National Crime Faculty which developed the Senior Investigating Officer (SIO) programme and the national police Initial Crime Investigators Development Programme ICIDP. Since he retired he has worked in Northern Ireland as an SIO on the Historical Enquiry Team and is now the Senior Forensic Pathology Manager overseeing the provision of forensic pathology services to police forces in England and Wales.
Melanie Lett has over 10 years experience as a Scenes of Crime Officer, Senior Scenes of Crime Officer and Principal Scenes of Crime Officer with Sussex Police. She is particularly interested in the strategic application of best practice within police Scientific Support Departments.
Bob Keeble is head of task and coordination in the Gloucestershire Police Criminal Justice Unit and is central in the development of the Gloucestershire Police interactive training intranet. Bob has over 30 years experience as an operational police officer and is a subject matter expert in building files for prosecution.
Caroline Monteith is a qualified legal executive who has a history working in child protection. She is now a professional case builder with the Gloucestershire Police Criminal Justice Unit and is also central in developing the Gloucestershire police interactive training intranet.
Jonathan Stainton-Ellis is a retired police officer with over 30 years service and with experience of investigations and their management. Following his retirement, he gained an MSc in Forensic Information Technology from the University of Portsmouth and now works as a digital forensic analyst with the Metropolitan Police Service. He regularly returns to the University of Portsmouth where he is a guest lecturer on the BSc course in Forensic Computing.
