England, Scotland, Wales & Northern Ireland. The seat of Western civilization and one of the most popular travel destinations in the worldbut wow is the United Kingdom EXPENSIVE!
So, how can you see this diverse, energetic, historic yet modern region without paying through the nose?
Did you know the famed Edinburgh Castle, a national symbol of Scotland (which usually costs 16.00 to enter), is free several days throughout the year?
Turns out that the U.K. is literally overflowing with free activities, destinations, events, and music, festivals, and more. And thats what this book is all about: having a good time without spending a dime.

Table of Contents Book 1: 103 Free Things To Do In The UK (excluding London) Book 2: 119 Free Things To Do In London Introduction This e-guidebook grew out of the second edition of The Free Travel Guide To London. It was an Amazon best selling eBook and readers had been asking me for more free attractions across the UK. After posting a few to Twitter and my blog, I realized pretty quickly that there was demand for a full book.

Inside youll find two books with a total of 222 free attractions. The first half covers 103 free things to do in the UK, including England, Scotland, Northern Ireland, and Wales. The second half is a full reproduction of The Free Travel Guide To London, which includes 119 free attractions in London. Writing a quality e-guidebook on the best free activities in the UK was a matter of deciding what to leave out! This book includes the best free museums, sightseeing attractions, events, music, galleries, outdoor activities, theatre, family fun, festivals, parades, tours, and more. As with my other e-guidebooks, this one is organized by categories: Free Museums, Free Art, Literature, and Architecture, Free Outdoor Activities, Free Kids and Family Activities, Free Transportation, Free Festivals and Parades, Free Tours and Walks. But if you want to explore by country or city, use the , which includes links to each attraction.

Just so you know, in this book, free can mean totally free or free with the purchase of something else. If an attraction is free only during certain times, Ive listed those times and the costs for non-free times. This guidebook takes advantage of the Kindle format and includes several other useful features. Each entry has links to the attractions Wikipedia, Facebook, Twitter, Google+, Foursquare, Yelp, and Trip Advisor entries, so you can get reviews from other travelers. Just look for these symbols: In the description of each entry youll find links to give context and - photo 3 In the description of each entry, youll find links to give context and information about famous people, places, and events related to the attraction. Each entry also has a descriptive image, contact information, and a link to the attractions website.

This e-guidebook is designed to be used on the go. Theres an interactive map that tells you where all the free attractions are. Every entry also has a link to Google Maps, so you can get directions from your current location, if you have a mobile internet connection. Many readers have written to let me know they used the Amazon Reader App to read this book to their smartphone, on location, just like an app. Finally, the appendix at the end of the book incudes the best free trip planning tools, historic and cultural information websites, event calendars, travel apps, and other free resources to help you get to and around London. Anyone who travels embraces constant change.

While readers send me new information regularly, and I make every attempt to update this book and republish it when new information arises. Still it is still best to confirm with the website of the attraction before venturing out. And if you find something that needs correcting, please let me know! I hope you have a great trip to the UK. If you like this book, please review it on Amazon, so I can continue to improve it. You can also get more free travel tips and ideas from my newsletter, Twitter, or blog. There are over 50 free national museums across the UK. In 2001, free entry to national museums was re-instituted after nearly 20 years. While entry to permanent exhibits is free, national museums can still charge for special exhibitions. Independent museums also still charge for entry. David Fleming, Director of the National Museums Liverpool has referred to the countrys collections as the best in the world. He also said that free access may not last much longer.

I could have filled this entire book with just free museums, but this chapter only includes 31 of the best. For a broader look here are lists of all museums in England, Scotland, Wales, and Northern Ireland. Military history enthusiasts will want to check out ArmyMuseums.org.uk to search all military museums in the UK. If youre looking for free museums in London, jump to Edinburgh is a city with more free museums than you could visit in a single trip. Favorites include the National Museum, for a wide-ranging, day long experience, or visit the Childhood Museum, or the Writers Museum if you want a shorter, more focused experience. Another town with outstanding free museums is Liverpool, home to the Maritime Museum, International Slavery Museum, the World Museum, and many others.

Fun niche museums include the Royal Irish Fusiliers Museum, in Armagh, Frenchay Village Museum, in Bristol (with the story of the first chocolate bar), and the National Football Museum, in Manchester. Two things to note. While the museums in this chapter are free or have free days, some do charge entry for special exhibits, tours, films, performances, etc, so check the links to museum calendars in advance. No matter which museum you visit, its best to go early in the day to avoid the crowds. Should you find anything that needs updating or come across other free museums worth sharing with other travelers, please email me at 1.
