In an ambitious undertaking, the 1988-89 AWAG Board of Governors set out to publish a guidebook written by women sharing their best suggestions for making the most of an overseas assignment. The original idea for the book was Jane MacPhersons, who convinced the AWAG Board of Governors of the value of such a publication. After the idea was accepted by the Board, Jane set about collecting information from the AWAG Area Representatives for the best buys, places to eat, and sights to see in their respective areas. Jane felt that women who lived in these areas were most able to provide the best knowledge. After all the information was gathered, Jane and AWAG enlisted the help of Sandy Murrow, who worked for Shoppers Bi-Weekly News, as a typesetter. With some professional help in the preparation and printing, the first publication was introduced at the May 1989 AWAG Conference in Willingen, West Germany. The book was so well-received that a second printing followed in October of that same year. A deluge of new and updated information began arriving at the editors desk, so a revised edition was printed in May 1990. In 1991 AWAG reorganized its areas from 14 to 11 and the book was revised again in September. In the 1993 and 1994, the books organization changed from AWAG areas to German states, the Ausland section was expanded, and the index updated. The eighth edition expanded the Ausland section even further.
AWAG went electronic in 2000, creating a web site to supplement the ninth edition of the book. The Board of Governors also added an e-mail address, so the editor could get the information needed to compile the next edition. The tenth edition expanding the idea of a shopping book to include many more family excursions. It was the first to be spiral-bound, making it more user-friendly and, in an effort to become available to the whole military community, the tenth edition was the first to be distributed and sold by AAFES as well as Private Organizations supporting the U.S. Forces in U.S. European Command. The eleventh edition benefits from the local verification of entries by the AWAG Area Representatives resulting in literally thousands of corrections and additions and the substitution of outdated fax information for internet addresses. It also includes a new chapter for Ireland.
The 12th edition printed in 2008 centered on expanding the NADM with sections on Italy and Belgium. The United Kingdom section also continues to grow.
In 2011 the AWAG Board of Governors have reedited the 13th edition with new submissions and updates. Internet addresses continue to be submitted and for the first time Skype numbers are being noticed on websites.
As always, the profits from book sales supplement the cost of our most important effort, the AWAG Annual Conference, training military community volunteers and benefiting all of the communities within the European theater.
Thank you for purchasing the newest edition of the NADM, your European travel guide. Happy travels!
The AWAG Board of Governors is extremely proud to present the 13th Edition of Never a Dull Moment travel guide. AWAG is celebrating our 55th Anniversary this year and we are very excited about the new additions and changes to the NADM.
AWAG was established in 1946 as a welfare organization and we have constantly evolved with the changes in the European Theater. This year we have also given new meaning to our name AWAG, which now stands for Americans Working Around the Globe. Our Board of Govenors felt that this was a true reflection of us all, as we move from our European duty stations to other assignments around the world we carry AWAG and all of our experiences and training with us, therefore working around the globe.
As an all volunteer board, consisting of members representing communities throughout Europe, we fully appreciate and understand the influence of volunteers on the quality of life and morale in our military communities. Its AWAGs honor and privilege to serve the communities and volunteers throughout Europe, always striving for excellence. AWAG continues to work hard to fulfil our Mission of training, strengthening and connecting volunteers to each other and their communities, from all branches of service.
The editing of this years edition was accomplished by Holly Logiudice, our NADM Editor. This was a huge undertaking as there were serveral changes made to the book on top of the normal additions and corrections. She did a fabulous job, thank you Holly. I would also like to take this opportunity to thank our entire Board of Governors for their contributions and validations of all previous entries. It was a true team effort to ensure that the 13th edition was ready for printing in time for our 55th Annual Conference.
Again, I am extremely proud and humbled to have had the chance to lead such a wonderful organization and group of volunteers. It is all of our hope that the Never a Dull Moment becomes your preeminent travel guide for the enjoyment of your tour in Europe.
