Introduction
I'm approaching 40 and I have to admit, I am afraid of a few things regarding my health. I'm afraid of cancer in any shape or form (my mother is a six-year breast cancer survivor), of being told I have developed diabetes (my father has had Type 2 diabetes for almost 20 years), of putting on even more extra pounds than I already have, oh yeah-and that little thing called menopause.
If you are about where I am in my life, or in your 40s or early 50s, you are bound to have a lot of questions and concerns about menopause. The first chapter in this book addresses many questions women have about menopause in general. The rest of the book helps you manage menopause and reduce the risk of chronic disease through one area of your life that you can do something about-an area that strongly influences your health-diet.
The 10 most common symptoms of perimenopause and what you can do to minimize them are covered in

Chapter 2. The most common questions about food and nutrition that women have during and after perimenopause are answered in Chapter 3. The 10 Food Steps to Freedom (of perimenopause and the chronic disease risk that escalates after menopause) are described for you in Chapter 4, which basically tell you which foods to choose and which foods to lose.
The remaining chapters give you the necessary tools to take those 10 Food Steps to Freedom in comfort and style. We give you the recipes you can't live without in Chapter 5. We tell you how to navigate the supermarket and find the foods and products that are going to make your life more comfortable and healthful in Chapter 6. And we give you suggestions to make restaurant dining work in your favor in Chapter 7. Just to make sure everything makes sense, we will walk you through some diet makeovers of women approaching or in the middle of menopause. We will talk about specific things they can do to improve their disease risks and make themselves more comfortable for the duration.
I personally see menopause as the second "rite of passage" for women-the first being childbirth. Well, I made it through the first passage-twice. I can make it through this one. Almost every postmenopausal woman has a story to tell, most based in humor, a few in horror. Here's hoping for humor. This was a perfect time for me to write and research this book because I am about to be this book's target audience. I had many of the questions and concerns that you probably have. I even spoke with a lot of women who were in the thick of it, just to make sure I hadn't missed anything. I feel a lot better now about what was formerly the unknown-perimenopause. I hope you will, too, after reading this book.
