Weve all seen the headlines: Self-Made Millionaire Donates $1 Million for Local Library. Youre thinking: Of coursehes got $50 million more where that came from. But what about this headline: Janitor Leaves $1 Million to Local School. How does someone with an average income actually have $1 million to begin with?

The truth is, the millionaire and the janitor traveled the same path to get to the mere possibility of such generosity: They saved. They invested. Your bank account balance may be closer to that of an average janitors than a millionaire moguls, but to get richeven a little richyou have to make smart decisions with the money you have. Because unless youre the next Steve Jobs or Mark Zuckerberg, putting the money you have to good use is one of the biggest secrets to getting rich and living even just a little of the good life.

13 Things the Rich Janitor Wont Tell You about Smart Saving 1 You need far - photo 3

13 Things the Rich Janitor Wont Tell You about Smart Saving

1. You need far less money each month than you think. The average salary of a janitor is about $25,000 a year. Even union-contracted custodians in well-off school districts earn an average of only about $50,000 a year. And yet, plenty of people earning average salaries join the millionaires club.

2. Work more, earn more. When youre in an hourly wage job, theres almost always an opportunity to pick up extra overtime; in hourly or salaried jobs, you can often offer to take on special projects for additional pay. Plus, working more means less time to spend the extra money youre earning.
