Preface
My interest in Verstehen goes back at least thirty years. Over the decades, I have developed my ideas on this topic in journal articles, book reviews, and book chapters.
There are several people who helped me along the way and whom I wish to thank. My wife, Jane Roland Martin, read and edited the entire manuscript; in addition, her own work on Verstehen has greatly influenced my own. Lee McIntyre read the manuscript and made important suggestions for its improvement. I am grateful also to Robert Cohen and the late Marx Wartofsky for their encouragement and their invitation in the late 1960s to speak at the Boston Colloquium for the Philosophy of Science. The paper I gave there touched on many of the themes I argue for in this book. Daniel Little invited me to present an earlier version of chapter 2 to a discussion group he organized at Harvard University and I wish to thank him for that opportunity. I am also indebted to Dagfinn Fllesdal of the University of Oslo for inviting me to present my ideas on methodological pluralism to the Philosophy of Science Colloquium, University of Oslo, and to the members of that colloquium for their constructive comments. Abner Shimony has been a constant source of support with respect to all my research and especially with regard to my work on Verstehen. Jane Cullen, my former editor at Temple University Press, has also been a steady source of encouragement. Finally, I would like to thank Irving Horowitz, my editor at Transaction Publishers, for his wise counsel and guidance.
I would like to express my gratitude to those editors and publishers who have granted me permission to incorporate into this book the following previously published material:

Taylor on "Interpretation and the Sciences of Man," in Readings in the Philosophy of Social Science, ed. Michael Martin and Lee McIntyre
