The reasonable man adapts himself to the world: the unreasonable one persists in trying to adapt the world to himself. Therefore all progress depends on the unreasonable man.
George Bernard Shaw, Man and Superman
We have written this book so that everyone can use it; anyone who uses existing or virtual keyboards, checks e-mails, makes calls, sends texts, sits, stands, writes, reads, tweets, posts, pins, snapchats, discusses, evaluates, prepares, presents, and makes decisions can find it useful. It is a practical book based on sound theory and research, augmented by our own experiences in offices. We based this book on the assumption that we all strive for some amount of productivity and success, and we would like to do so with minimal aches, pains, and discomfort. We would also like to have solid working relationships with colleagues and clients, suppliers and vendors, and superiors and subordinates. In the best of all worlds, we would also truly enjoy our jobs and happily lose ourselves in our work the way we lost ourselves in play as young children or lose ourselves in a riveting book or a scintillating movie as adults.
This book suggests how best to achieve this harmonious work scenario by optimizing the fit between the personincluding his/her capabilities and limitationsthe equipment used, and the persons environment. This, in a nutshell, is what ergonomics is all about. Accordingly, this book offers advice on how to set up the office, at home or at a company; how to select and arrange equipment and furniture; how to organize and pace work; how to understand and interact with colleagues and associates; and how to do all of this with appropriate ergonomic design to prevent repetitive strain injuries, musculoskeletal disorders, and the resulting long-term disabilities that can develop over time. In other words, we hope to show how to perform at ease and efficientlythe motto of ergonomics.
Given that it focuses on the fit between the person, equipment, and environment, ergonomics borrows from a number of disciplines, including industrial psychology, industrial design, industrial engineering, physiology, cognitive psychology, biomechanics, mechanical engineering, and anthropometry. You will notice this as we progress through the ensuing chapters.
How boring if we were all the same! And yet that leads us to a small disclaimer. The recommendations in this book apply mostly to American, Down Under, and European users. For example, the chair measures suggested here fit their bodies, while other populations with fundamentally different body sizes would need other ranges in furniture dimensions and adjustments. Furthermore, working postures and habits can differ strongly among the various populations on earth. Preferences for colors, lighting, or temperature in the office vary from one continent and climate zone to the next. However, with modifications and adjustments as needed, these ergonomic principles apply everywhere.
Please use this book in the manner that is best for you:
- Read it straight through from beginning to end, as in a university course. Then consider whether you should change things in your office environment to be more comfortable.
- Read a section of interest, think about applying that information, and proceed to the ergonomic recommendations that make use of that information.
- Use the Index to look up a topic of concern to you, and proceed to the ergonomic recommendations that make use of that information.
If you find that this book is of help, or that we should include something else you feel is important, please reach out to Taylor & Francis Group at .
We welcome your feedback!
