Foreword
Twenty years ago I listened with the feckless awe of a neophyte as one of the leading authorities on Civil War soldiery delivered a group portrait of the men who fought the war. In discussing the proclivities of mid-nineteenth-century America under arms, the putative expert declared unctuously, "Rape, of course, was unheard of in that era." The proclamation gladdened me, I recall, because that kind of restrained behavior reflects precisely the way things ought to be. The authoritative verdict, sad to say, was based on whimsy rather than research.
