Introduction
In His will is our peace. Dante Alighieri
In the shallows of an estuary, tiny fish hang motionless in a sunbeam outlined by the shadow of a mangrove branch. As the dark form of a larger fish looms into view, one of the small ones flashes into motion, then another, jiggling the kaleidoscopic pattern of liquid sunlight.
Overhead, a tight formation of three pelicans glides gracefully above the surface. One of them peels off, dives, and splashes awkwardly into the brownish green lagoon, soon surfacing with a fishtail frantically flapping from the side of its satchel beak.
As the pelican swallows convulsively, then heaves itself into the sky again, under the mangrove branch a tiny fish, motionless, peers from behind a sodden leaf and seems to tremble. It won't soon venture forth. All is quiet until the timeless stillness of this tranquil scene is interrupted again.
And again.
As I muse on this eternal interplay of life and death, my skiff drifting on the placid water near my south Florida home, I feel nostalgic. I sense my distant past. The mangrove roots that claw into the squishy black mud are my own. This is my world. I feel a part of it.

But how much a part of it am I really? For the pelicans and fish are acting on instincthunger and fear. To a great extent, I have freed myself, as have all of us, from the pull of instinct.
The birds and the fish are, if any creatures are, encompassed body and mind by their Creator's will. They have not the least awareness that their will and their lives are being directed by a Higher Power. But they are. They can will nothing and live in no way other than that which has been provided for them in nature, a creative force that some say springs from God.
Can the same be said of us?
Our willis it truly our own? And can we do with it as we wish? Can we keep it or give it away? Is it our choice? Is it within our power?
