How many of us have felt like Phillip Z? He has a staunch belief in the Twelve Steps, yet struggles with the concept of a Higher Power. In A Skeptics Guide to the 12 Steps, the author investigates each of the Twelve Steps to gain a deeper understanding of a Higher Power. He examines what may seem like unsettling concepts to us including surrendering ones will and life to God, and he encourages us to understand the spiritual journey of recovery despite our skepticism.

A Skeptic's Guide to the Twelve Steps is for anyone involved in a Twelve Step program and for those curious about the Twelve Steps. It can serve as a non-traditional guide to those working the Steps and to those who want to broaden their understanding of the nature of addiction and the recovery process. Phillip Z. shares his struggles, discoveries, and personal changes as he takes his journey through the Twelve Steps, drawing on Jungian and transpersonal psychology, Eastern spirituality, and generous doses of the Big Book (Alcoholics Anonymous) and Twelve Steps and Twelve Traditions. He's able to weave these elements together to work a meaningful program that allows him to live the principles of those Steps daily.
About the author:
Phillip Z. has been a state-licensed marriage, family, and child counselor since 1975. He maintains a private therapy practice where he works with individuals, couples, and families, and offers training and consultation to mental health workers. He is the former clinical director for a family treatment program specializing in alcohol and other drug-related problems and also served as an adjunct faculty member in a university graduate program in psychology for several years.

Preface
During the years I have been involved in Overeaters Anonymous, I have witnessed a dramatic increase in public awareness regarding addiction and its disastrous effect on the lives of addicts and those living and working with them. Bookstores all across America are devoting more and more shelf space to addiction and recovery materials. Articles reporting on new developments in the recovery field appear regularly in the press. Seemingly every day another public figure gives a testimonial in support of a Twelve Step program that changed his or her life. Just the other night, I watched a sketch on the popular television show, "Saturday Night Live," poking fun at Twelve Step programs and celebrities who sing the praises of recovery.
