Foreword
These meditations grew out of an effort to explain to the people I sponsor in Alcoholics Anonymous how the Twelve Steps of A.A. have transformed me. Though I had wanted to capture and convey the dynamic power of the Steps, I did not anticipate that writing them would advance my own understanding and growth. As I continued to write, the Steps began to come alive in a new way for me. Their potential for transformation was activated on an even deeper level for me.
I feel the result is a fresh look at the Twelve Steps. I have supplemented my belonging to the fellowship of A.A. and practicing the Steps with keeping a journal, studying Jungian psychology, and becoming more aware of the spiritual traditions of world religions. I would imagine all these factors have had their influence on me.
Each chapter begins with a brief quotation from the Big Book.* In the subsequent meditation, I have tried to describe the internal effect each Step has had on me and what I have learned. In this way, each chapter is a meditation on the corresponding Step.
The first meditation explores how I am powerless not only over alcohol but over other addictive tendencies.
In the second meditation I describe my experience of a Higher Power as an inner Presence that strengthens and guides me.

In the third meditation I discuss my struggle to turn over my self-will and enter into a partnership with this inner Presence.
In the fourth meditation I take an inventory of my different forms of selfishness and how they obstruct my relationship with the inner Presence.
In the fifth meditation I admit the nature of my wrongs by acknowledging how I have tried to twist my spiritual search into a self-satisfying pursuit.
In the sixth meditation I begin a dialogue with the Deep Self in order to overcome my resistance to an inner transformation.
The seventh meditation continues this dialogue and describes how I adjust to letting the inner Presence have the initiative in molding my life.

In the eighth meditation I realize the correlation between the people I have harmed and my own rejected qualities, and I prepare to become inwardly reconciled.

The ninth meditation discloses how this inner reconciliation bears fruit by reconnecting me with other people and with a new sense of my purpose in life.
In the tenth meditation I derive personal signals from my inventory that will help me recognize the different forces trying to influence me.
The eleventh meditation attempts to convey my experience of conscious contact with the inner Presence.

And the twelfth meditation describes the path of spiritual awakening brought about by the previous Steps and shows how they have begun to mold me into an agent of healing for others.
In the course of these reflections, the voices of some interior guides have emerged. These voices are the result of a long process of absorbing and internalizing the wisdom of other people. By listening to others, particularly to my sponsor, the

healthy forces that have been at work in these people strike up a resonance with the healthy forces in me. For this reason, contact with my sponsor and with the spirit of the A.A. fellowship is vital in order to nourish and maintain these inner guides.
