As technology changes rapidly, new words and phrases are being introduced into our vocabulary, many with Net or Web affixed to them. The convergence of the media industries often brings with it a clash of professional vocabularies. Over time, some terms remain stable while others seem to disappear or transform their meaning. Multimedia and the Web from A-Z is a comprehensive dictionary aimed at stabilizing and clearly defining the language of multimedia. This second edition has been completely revised and expanded and contains 1,500 entries, including 500 new terms or phrases, all clearly and concisely defined.Extensive cross-referencing, an annotated bibliography, and an acronym table are other useful additions to this dictionary.

The rare Arabian Oryx is believed to have inspired the myth of the unicorn. This desert antelope became virtually extinct in the early 1960s. At that time several groups of international conservationists arranged to have 9 animals sent to the Phoenix Zoo to be the nucleus of a captive breeding herd. Today the Oryx population is over 1,000, and over 500 have been returned to the Middle East.

Foreword
A Turbulent Vocabulary for a Restless Industry
The first edition of this work was entitled Multimedia Technology from A to Z. We were compelled to change the title for this second edition, even though the act of doing so leaves us with an uneasy feeling. A slang term at loose in the information technology (I/T) industry is "Internet years." It refers to the accelerated rates of change that have characterized every manner of I/T for the past several decades. Though only three years have passed since our first edition appeared, at least a decade of Internet years have transpired, exploding major change on top of major change and inducing us to cannibalize the title of our own book.
Though we have acquiesced to the powerful forces for change unleashed by the sudden rise in Web use, we have done so with some trepidation. In constructing our first edition of this book, we were motivated by the desire to help formulate an established vocabularya nomenclaturefor the emerging and highly interdisciplinary field of multimedia. That desire has not changed one bit. Indeed, the continued ascent of multimedia as a powerful new form of communication has done nothing but encourage and strengthen our commitment to this goal. At the core of that goal is the belief that no human endeavor can be successful at achieving its full potential unless it bases itself upon a robust and stable language. The professionals of any industry seeking to impart the magnitude of social and economic change that is being contemplated for multimedia must be able to communicate with one another in the most efficient ways possible.
Thus, the notion of "Internet years" is filled with paradoxical elements. The ascent of the Web is a force of enormously positive change for those seeking to advance the many causes of multimedia. It satisfies, in fact, the most urgent need that confronted multimedia practitioners at the time we were writing the first edition. It provides a cost-effective and potentially pervasive means to distribute digital media content. For multimedia, it is the equivalent of Gutenberg's printing press.
