Pamela Bloom is a music and arts critic, travel, and fiction writer, whose work has appeared in The New York Times, The Chicago Tribune, and The Los Angeles Times, as well as High Fidelity, Musician, Downbeat, Seven Days, Connoisseur, and Elle magazines, among others. She received a B.A. in comparative literature from Trinity College (Hartford, CT), attended Dartmouth College, and also studied opera at Indiana University and the Juilliard School of Music. She taught the history of Brazilian jazz at the New School for Social Research in New York, and has presented multimedia lectures on Brazilian music and culture at the Ballroom Club in Manhattan, for their annual Brazilian jazz series. A world traveler, Pamela Bloom has pursued writing assignments in China, Spain, Greece, and the Caribbean, as well as throughout the U.S.A. As a dedicated Brazilophile, she has danced in Rio's Carnaval with the Portela Samba School, interviewed the country's top musicians and traveled extensively within Brazil. A native of Houston, Texas, she presently resides in New York City.

To My Readers
One day late in the summer of 1985, I was walking down West 65th Street in Manhattan, wondering why the Brazilian at my side was not as madly in love with me as I was with him, when suddenly he handed me his headphones and purred, "Pamela, you must leesen to deese."
From that moment on, when I first heard the voice of the great Elis Regina singing the songs of Milton Nascimento, my life irrevocably changed. Like many before and after me, it was the wings of song that carried me into the heart and soul of Brazilian culture, one that at first seemed so exotic, but

has since come to feel like second skin. As a music critic, I've had the rare opportunity of sitting down to talk with the country's greatest musicians, visiting their homes in Brazil, watching them record, and listening like a child at their feet as they discussed their dreams and visions and the ineffable power of their music. In 1986, I even had the wondrous joy of dancing with the Portela Samba School in Rio's Carnaval.
Still, nothing can match the privilege of writing this Up Close Guide (and its previous incarnations, the first three editions of Fielding's Brazil, 1993, 1994 and 1995). Being able to travel to over 60 cities and villagesmeeting the locals, tasting their food, surfing their waves, tramping their forests, and yes, even getting bitten by their bugshas allowed me to begin to understand what makes up Brazil, and, more importantly, what makes a Brazilian. The very size and diversity of this tropical country defies simple stereotype, but there is one thing that is certain: anyone who travels to Brazil with an open heart is sure to return home with an incurable case of saudadean indefinable Portuguese word that is translated most often as "unrequited longing.'' The late Brazilian composer Antnio Carlos Jobim immortalized that feeling in the music of bossa nova, but for travelers it can mean only one thing: book a return passage as fast as you can.
Frankly, I wrote this guidebook for the kind of tourist who wants to engage himself body and soul in Brazil and Brazilian culture. In fact, I have always written the kind of guidebooks I wanted to readone that not only inspires adventure, but also demystifies any obstacles to travel. As such, in Brazil Up Close, you'll find not only straight-from-the-hip tips about hotels, restaurants, and tours, but also first-person narratives and interviews that bring the color of Brazil to life. In fact, there's enough information and background here that non-Portuguese speaking tourists may never have to hire a private guide to explain what they're looking at. In this new edition, I have included not only the major tourist destinations, but some really out-of-the-way excursions for those who want a few extra thrills.
