BEST LANDSCAPES AND JOURNEYS

Mingsha Shan and Crescent Moon Lake. Get a taste of the Taklamakan Desert by taking a camel ride in these great dunes near Dunhuang.

Flaming Mountains. This is a major landmark near Turpan, enshrined in Chinese folklore.

Lake Karakul. Just off the Karakoram Highway, the lake has great views of the Kunlun peaks of Kongur and Muztagh Ata.

Heaven Lake (Tian Chi). High in the Tian Shan to the east of Urumqi, at the base of Bogda Shan, this makes an invigorating escape.

Kyrgyzstan jailoos. These are the upland pastures where the Kyrgyz nomads live during the summer. Visitors can stay in a nomads yurt.

Tajikistans Pamir Highway. This is an amazing journey following the Silk Road across the roof of the world, in the footsteps of some famous explorers.

Iskander-Kul (Alexanders Lake) features on almost every trekking itinerary in Tajikistans Fan Mountains. Legend has it that Alexander the Great appears riding on his horse through the water during a full moon.

Hunza Valley, Pakistan. On the Karakoram Highway from China, this most beautiful of valleys is dominated by the enormous Rakaposhi.

Syrian Desert. The classical desert route, between Dura Europos and Damascus via the ancient city of Palmyra, is what the Middle East section of the Silk Road is all about.

Istanbul . The meeting point of Europe and Asia, Christianity and Islam, is the vibrant starting point of the Silk Road in the west.

Herat. Dominated by the remains of a citadel constructed by Alexander the Great, this ancient Afghan city could become a major Silk Road destination again.

Shiraz. The city that gave its name to the grape variety, and a centre of Iranian poetry.

Isfahan, Iran , once the showcase of Persian art and architecture, has some breathtakingly stunning buildings.

Damascus, Syria.
This great capital, one
of the worlds oldest cities, is home to the Umayyad Mosque and an ancient citadel.

Peshawar, Pakistan. A maze of bazaars, the most authentic on the Silk Road.

Aleppo, Syria. Famous for its labyrinthine souks.
