Preface
This is the first in the SUBLIME WELLNESS LIFESTYLE SERIES.
I was told by a doctor when I was a teenager that I would have a high chance (almost probable, he said) of developing rheumatoid arthritis. I was an active and relatively athletic kid, and after looking up what the disease was, I decided I would take measures to try to never let it happen.
I learned that inflammation was the enemy .
So far (I am a baby-boomer who just turned 60), I have not developed rheumatoid arthritis, arthritis or any inflammatory disease. I am a big fan of turmeric and boswellia (frankincense). I have taken a daily supplement for decades; have used curcumin (the active ingredient in turmeric) in cooking and recipes during the 16 years I lived in Paris, France and after.
When I formed a wellness-related company (Sublime Naturals), I knew that turmeric and anti-inflammatory products would be part of it along with products to help naturally support the immune system. This short book is an outgrowth of these experiences, as is the new wellness lifestyle series of eBooks.
Reach out with any questions, and enjoy the short book!

As a kid, whenever we got sick, my mom would take milk and put turmeric in it. That was our medicine. That was the cure-all. Some people turn to Robitussin.

CHAPTER 1
WHY USE TURMERIC?
THE BENEFITS
Before we get into WHAT turmeric and curcumin (the active ingredient in turmeric) are, lets go over some of the benefits. It will help answer the question WHY use turmeric and why read this book .
There is excellent research and knowledge about turmeric showing clear health benefits. In fact, there are over 7,000 peer-reviewed studies on curcumin, the active ingredient in turmeric. There are over 1,000 scientific research papers on curcumin in PubMed. (a)
Turmeric has been actively used for centuries in India (its in the curry spice!), China, Asian countries and Middle Eastern countries for many conditions and overall health, with good results. More Western- style clinical-medical studies have emerged to back up what people have known for a long time.
SOME OF THE BENEFITS ARE:
IS ANTI-INFLAMMATORYFIGHTS AGAINST CANCERREDUCES STRESSBOOSTS THE IMMUNE SYSTEMIS A STRONG ANTIOXIDANTDECREASES HEART DISEASE RISK & SUPPORTS ARTERY HEALTHHELPS THE DIGESTIVE SYSTEM & CAN HELP PREVENT BOWEL CANCERHELPFUL FOR OILY SKIN, SENSITIVE SKIN, AGING SKIN & ECZEMASUPPORTS HEALTHY BLOOD SUGAR LEVELSCOULD HELP SLOW ALZHEIMERS & MORE
Turmeric is powerful for wellness. It is appropriate for all ages, on the FDA GRAS (generally recognized as safe) list. Due to its special qualities (such as anti- inflammatory, possibly slowing Alzheimers & supporting heart health), is especially helpful for the aging population . Kathy Heshelow
BENEFITS WHY USE TURMERIC
In Ayurvedic India , it has been used as an all-round tonic and internal cleanser for centuries. In Chinese medicine , it has been used for sores, bruises, chest pain, warming, tooth ache and was once a treatment for jaundice.
Recent studies in Japan have shown the relationship with interleukin (IL-6), which is the inflammatory cytokine involved in rheumatoid arthritis, and found that curcumin (the active component of turmeric) significantly reduced these inflammatory markers. (1)
Modern research has shown that regular ingestion of the spice may help prevent bowel cancer.
Based on a 2011 study conducted by the University of Texas MD Anderson Cancer Center, researchers found that the curcumin extract effectively differentiates between cancer cells and normal cells while activating cancer cell death (apoptosis).
Investigators concluded , Curcumin exerts its biological influence through epigenetic modulation, a process that continues downstream staying one step ahead of adverse genetic influences. (2)
Further, as Dr. Greger wrote concerning another study regarding colon cancer, researchers at Cleveland Clinic and John Hopkins School of Medicine tested two phytochemicals, curcumin (from turmeric) and quercitin, (found in fruits and vegetables such as red onions and grapes) in people with familial adenomatous polyposis, an inherited form of colon cancer in which individuals develop hundreds of polyps that may become cancerous unless prophylactically removed.
Researchers gave supplements of curcumin and quercetin to five such patients who already had their colons removed, but still had either polyps in their rectum or in a little intestinal pouch. Each patient had between 5 and 45 polyps each, but after six months on the supplement they ended up with on average fewer than half the polyps, and the ones that were left had shrunk in half.
One patient got rid of all polyps by month three, but then they seemed to come back. The researchers asked the patient whats what, and it turned out that the patient stopped taking the supplements. So researchers put the patient back on the phytonutrient supplements for another three months, and the polyps came back down with virtually no adverse events and no blood test abnormalities. (3)
Powerful evidence, among conclusions in many other many studies!
In the West, we recognize the strong anti-inflammatory powers of turmeric and those in the know have been using it in supplements, in food and drinks and even topically. Reducing arthritis, rheumatoid arthritis and inflammatory diseases or the symptoms is of great interest, especially to the aging population that is more prone to develop these diseases.
It is estimated that more than 2 million Americans suffer from rheumatoid arthritis (RA) today and the numbers are increasing. Currently the annual cost of the disease in the US is over $2B.
It is typically a progressive degeneration, with much pain and debilitation. Dr. Mercola has treated several thousand RA patients, so he has experience, and he is well-known for digging into alternative and natural treatments.
