To Our Fellow Non-Tourists,
This book has every detail you need about the little City on the Hill, from how to catch a game of one of our World Champion teams (Bruins! Sox! Pats!) to where you can get the best pizza on the entire east coast (Santarpios!).
This book is not only a first-rate guidebook but also a love letter to this very unique and small city. The incredible people you see on the facing page have spent their time scouting out places in the nooks and crannies near and farfrom breakfast joints hidden in the backroom of convenience stores to the incredibly new and ritzy restaurants that now circle the Fort Point Channel; from hobnobbing and enjoying a libation at Top of the Hubs no-cover bar seats in the highest-point-in-the-Prudential-Buildings Jazz Lounge, to sidling up to talk philosophy at Harvard Squares basement bargain Grendels Den, where food is half price much of the time with a three-buck beverage buy-in. We know, we know, its a thankless job roaming around the city, making sure that every bar has fresh beer on tap, but somehow well survive.
If our fellow Non-Tourists will allow us, we want to send you to order a garlic and hot pepper pie in East Boston from Santarpios and to sit at the bar at The Ashmont Grill to chat up the bartenders. Weve got an extra ticket for the Sox game and were going to have to hit up the Baseball Tavern to make sure to celebrate the right way, before catching a concert at Green Monster-abutting Lansdowne Streets House of Blues chapter. Were going to go see the craziness at Jacques Cabaret and then pop into the Brattle Bookshop (downtowns Theatre District) to stock up for a quiet evening in, or take in a foreign flick at the landmark, art deco Coolidge Corner movie theatre and then browse in independent ink-on-paper icon Booksmith, across the street (Brookline). Put a whole group of crazy writers in your pocket, and youll always find the best spot for everything.

Beacon Hill / West End
Map 1
Beacon Hill is still home to some of the most expensive real estate in America. Charming brick row houses reflect a long and storied history; where the State House stands, John Hancock once grazed cows. Full gentrification has yet to reach the West End, where government buildings, hospitals, and tucked-away burrito joints mingle fairly harmoniously.
