Be an opener of doors for such as come after thee.

Ralph Waldo Emerson

We dedicate this volume to Robert I. Simon, M.D., the lead editor of the first and second editions of The American Psychiatric Publishing Textbook of Forensic Psychiatry. Dr. Simon was awarded the American Academy of Psychiatry and the Law and the American Psychiatric Associations joint Manfred S. Guttmacher Award three times for outstanding contributions to the literature of forensic psychiatry. He was also awarded the American Psychiatric Associations Isaac Ray Award in recognition of his outstanding contributions to the fields of forensic psychiatry and the psychiatric aspects of jurisprudence.

Dr. Simon understood the need for a textbook of forensic psychiatry, particularly one accessible to general and forensic psychiatrists alike. He was the moving force behind both the first and the second editions of this text. Dr. Simon was gratified to be Editor Emeritus for this third edition and, as always, planned to make his own contribution to the text.
