How to manage your most difficult feelings and building the emotional strength you need to create the life of your dreams.Sadness, shame, helplessness, anger, embarrassment, disappointment, frustration, and vulnerability. In 30 years as a practicing psychologist, Dr. Joan Rosenberg has found that what most often blocks people from success and feeling capable in life is the inability to experience, move through, and handle these 8 unpleasant feelings. Knowing how to deal with intense, overwhelming, or uncomfortable feelings is essential to building confidence, emotional strength, and resilience. Yet when we distract or disconnect from these feelings, we move away from confidence, health, and our desired pursuits, ultimately undermining our ability to fully realize our ambitions.Neuroscientists suggest that the biological lifespan of a feeling, often known first through bodily sensations, lasts approximately 90 seconds. Dr. Rosenberg teaches readers to be aware, consciously lean into, and balance these unpleasant emotions by riding one or more 90-second waves of the bodily sensations. By staying present to these 8 feelings, we cultivate the confidence that we can handle lifes challenges and the deep sense we can pursue whatever we want.Combining more than three decades of clinical experience with aspects of clinical psychology, mindfulness, and neuroscience research, 90 Seconds to a Life You Love is a strategic and practical guide on building core emotional strength, reducing anxiety, and developing the confidence you need to create a life of your design -- a life you love.

To my mother and father.

For giving me life.

For all the ways you sacrificed so my life could be better.

For your patient understanding, unwavering love and support.

To my father.

A man of few words who inspired the love of them.

To my mother.

You embody kindness and what it means to age with grace, beauty and poise.

You inspire everyone you meet and every life you touch.

You make me want to be better with each passing day.

Ive been in the personal development industry for 47 years, hosting or teaching alongside my friendsluminaries such as Wayne Dyer, Les Brown, Bob Proctor, Marianne Williamson, Deepak Chopra, Gay Hendricks, and more. I am a mentor to many recognizable thought leaders in the personal development field. I have also served at the request of the Dalai Lama for a peace initiative on three separate occasions, collaborated with Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.s children on Season for Nonviolence initiatives, and spoken at the United Nations three times.

Joan and I share degrees in Counseling Psychology, me with my masters, Joan with her doctorate, and while we share more than a 40-year history in personal development, Joan delved deeply into it from a psychology standpoint while my focus was dialed-in to understanding the spiritual side of success.

I distinctly remember my hour-long conversation on the lawn of The Old Manse, the home of Ralph Waldo Emerson, where I first had the opportunity for an extended conversation with Joan, in September 2013. Joan caught my attention for a variety of reasons; though soft-spoken and a bit reserved on first meeting, her warmth, quick wit, and insightful comments quickly stood out. At that time, I was leading a personal development training as part of the Concord Experience, a program intended to deepen ones understanding of Transcendentalism, the American contribution to the worlds body of theological knowledge.

During our conversation, Joan pulled out a one-page diagram representing 25 years of her lifes work and shared her perspective on personal growth and well-beingwhich included what it takes to develop unwavering self-confidence. In all my years of study, I had never seen such a brilliant yet simple approach to REAL transformation.

This book, 90 Seconds to a Life You Love, is the embodiment of that one-page document. I understood right away that she had outlined a very important process for others to follow.

I find the simplicity of the concept so inviting and so practicalthe idea that you can move from one side of an unpleasant emotion to the other side in roughly 90 seconds, if you just allow yourself to really experience it. And, it definitely works.

The technique Dr. Rosenberg lays out (which she calls The Rosenberg Reset) really does build on the foundation of this small window of time, 90 seconds, and your ability to tolerate eight different unpleasant feelings.

Whats so fascinating is how Joan takes this simple concept and applies it to countless common emotional challenges that most of us face. Not only does handling these eight feelings help lead to emotional strength, confidence, and resilience, it can help diminish anxiety and end harsh self-criticism, making it easier for you to speak up and end your fear of failure. In my experience, all of us can benefit from some help in these areas. And thats only the start!

To that end, given Joans unique perspective on many areas of personal growth, Ive invited her to speak to my audiences and train them on multiple occasionsand her 90-seconds approach is something I often refer to in my own trainings.

Youll have a chance to read more about the science behind the 90-seconds approach, unpleasant feelings, and learn from Joans insights, gleaned from her decades of work in this field. She really outlines how such a simple method can help you move through difficult emotions into a healthier way of thinking and acting. Joans strategies intersect well with my work in helping people change their results so they can live a life they love. And Joans work integrates equally well with many familiar psychotherapy approaches.

And now Im prompted to ask: Why has no one encouraged this before? Why is such a logical, digestible, and absolutely doable technique not the centerpiece of every confidence-building course, counselor training, and psychotherapy practice in America?

The methods outlined in this book not only make sense academically, but in example after example that Dr. Rosenberg points to in order to illustrate and illuminate her methods, we see stories of how this system works in real life. What you are about to encounter in the following pages is not just theoretical mumbo jumbo or feel-good thinking rooted in little more than optimism; 90 Seconds to a Life You Love is a guided tour through unpleasant feelings and damaging thought patterns into real, meaningful, and lasting confidence, resilience, and change for the better.

What you hold in your hand is perhaps one of the MOST important books you will ever own. Read it once with curiosity and then the second time as a manual for learning how you too can have a life you truly love, one 90 seconds at a time. Then, share this book with all those you truly care about.
