GATEWAY OF INDIA

The heart of Mumbais tourist district and its most famous landmark, the Gateway of India was commisioned for the visit of King George V and Queen Mary in 1911, but was not built until 1924. It was once the first sight to greet travellers to Indian shores in the heyday of the British Raj. Ironically, it also became the exit point for British troops after India gained independence in 1947. Today, it is Mumbais most popular gathering place, and is always teeming with locals, visitors, vendors and boatmen.
